Overview
This opportunity is for a Mechanical Estimator to join a preconstruction team supporting a mechanical construction contractor in Poughkeepsie, New York. The position focuses on building precise and competitive pricing for mechanical project pursuits, with emphasis on HVAC, process piping, and plumbing work.
The role is important to the success of bid efforts because it involves reviewing project information, assessing risk, and working with both internal teams and outside vendors to prepare informed proposals. It also supports efficiency improvements, cost reduction ideas, and work in a fast-moving environment with a large number of bid opportunities.
Core Responsibilities
- Complete detailed takeoffs and turn them into thorough project cost estimates.
- Study construction drawings, technical specifications, and bid packages to understand project scope.
- Create pricing models for labor, materials, and subcontracted work.
- Coordinate with suppliers, subcontractors, and internal teams to collect scope and pricing information.
- Assemble, organize, and deliver bid submissions before required deadlines.
- Spot project risks, missing scope items, and opportunities for savings or value engineering.
- Handle several bids at once in a fast-paced preconstruction setting.
Qualifications
- At least 3 to 7+ years of experience in mechanical estimating or a closely related discipline.
- Background in process piping and/or process mechanical projects is needed.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and technical documents.
- Solid understanding of HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems.
- Experience using estimating tools such as Trimble, QuickPen, Bluebeam, or similar platforms.
- Strong analytical ability and careful attention to detail.
Preferred Background
- A bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
- Prior involvement with value engineering and cost-saving strategies is an advantage.
- Exposure to high-volume bidding environments is preferred.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this role is $80,000 to $120,000 annually. The package also includes flexible compensation elements, bonus potential, a 401(k), benefits, and mileage reimbursement.
