The opportunity
This position sits within Stuff Digital, where technology helps deliver content and products to more than two million people across New Zealand each month through web, app, and video channels. The engineering environment is modern and spans audience-facing product work, AI-enabled tooling, and a technology stack that includes React, Java, and related tools.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will act as a strong technical partner to the Tech Leads, helping shape system design, lift engineering standards, and support the growth of the wider team.
What you will do
- Develop secure, scalable, and high-performance software solutions.
- Help guide architectural decisions and broader technical direction.
- Coach and support other engineers while promoting strong engineering practices.
- Contribute to innovation using AI, automation, and new technologies.
- Work closely with Product, Design, and Data teams to deliver value for customers.
- Enhance application performance, accessibility, and overall platform stability.
- Take an active role in Agile ways of working and ongoing process improvement.
What you will bring
- Substantial software engineering experience, along with the ability to provide technical leadership.
- Practical experience building modern web applications, APIs, and cloud-based systems.
- Working knowledge of technologies such as Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Spring, PHP, or similar frameworks and languages.
- Hands-on experience with AWS, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and contemporary DevOps approaches.
- A collaborative mindset and a genuine interest in mentoring and continuous learning.
- Curiosity about AI and how it can improve software development and the customer experience.
