Role Overview
The Shift Supervisor supports the Store Manager with the day-to-day running of the thrift store so operations remain smooth and uninterrupted. When needed, the role also functions as a Sales Associate.
Key Duties
- Welcome customers and donors with a courteous, helpful, and positive approach.
- Safeguard the quality and integrity of donated goods.
- Process transactions accurately, including cash and debit sales.
- Help the store meet budget targets by maintaining strong customer service.
- Carry out opening and closing duties in line with store procedures when assigned.
- Receive, unload, sort, pack, price, and store donated materials.
- Use product knowledge to answer customer questions by phone or in person.
- Monitor activity in the store to help maintain security.
- Handle merchandise safely and neatly, including stock rotation.
- Support inventory control through receiving, sorting, and pricing based on instructions.
- Assist with visual merchandising, window displays, and overall store presentation.
- Restock inventory as directed and remove items from the sales floor when required.
- Ensure donated items are sorted and processed according to quality expectations.
- Keep the store clean, organized, and presentable through tidying, shelving, sweeping, dusting, and mopping.
- Follow all store policies and procedures.
- Support cycle counts and inventory reconciliation.
- Deliver excellent service to guests and donors.
- Serve as working team lead for store associates when the Store Manager is absent.
- Provide demonstrations and on-the-job guidance to staff when needed.
- Maintain a safe workplace by following health and safety requirements.
- Carry out other job-related tasks as assigned.
Relationships and Reporting
This position reports directly to the Store Manager and does not have direct reports. Internal contacts include NRO Administration, TS management, and staff. External contacts include donors, clients, and contractors.
Work Environment
This is a permanent full-time position based in a normal retail store environment. The work involves frequent physical activity, including stretching, lifting up to 30 pounds without assistance, bending, twisting, pushing, standing, and walking. The role may also involve regular exposure to dust, fumes, and changing temperatures. Deadlines must be met consistently, and the work can include frequent interpersonal conflict with guests, donors, vendors, and employees. Tasks vary and may include repetitive activities.
Education and Experience
- Some high school education is required.
- Two years of experience in a retail store or warehouse setting is needed.
- An equivalent mix of education and experience may also be considered.
- The applicant must be willing to understand and support The Salvation Army’s mission and how it relates to the role.
- The applicant must work in compliance with OH&S legislation and follow the organization’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Skills and Capabilities
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Physical capability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds frequently without assistance.
- Comfort with bending, twisting, pulling, and pushing merchandise.
- Strong attention to detail.

Successful completion of applicable screening and background checks is required, to the satisfaction of The Salvation Army.
Location
This role is for the Sydney Thrift Store (New Store), 2455 Beacon Avenue, Sidney, British Columbia, V8L 1X7.
Compensation
The expected hiring range is $18.25 to $22.23 per hour, with a maximum rate of $26.20 per hour. Placement within the pay range will depend on market conditions, internal equity, and the candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and qualifications.
