About the organisation
ASB’s Payments Tribe is central to the movement of money in New Zealand, supporting everything from everyday transactions through to card and business payment journeys that customers depend on daily. The team is actively modernising its payments ecosystem across areas such as Cards, operating in a complex, highly integrated environment with multiple squads and strong system dependencies.
About the role
This is an opportunity for an experienced Test Manager to join the Payments Tribe and help deliver dependable, high-quality payment experiences. The role focuses on end-to-end test leadership across a large programme, with close collaboration across squads rather than formal people management.
You will partner with engineers, Product Owners, and other stakeholders to support delivery of secure, performant, and fit-for-purpose solutions. The work sits within high-throughput payment platforms where resilience, speed, and accuracy matter greatly. In a fast-moving enterprise setting, you will coordinate testing across squads and help shape quality outcomes across the Cards domain.
Key responsibilities
- Own and drive test delivery across several squads within a major programme.
- Coordinate daily testing activities, planning, and execution across teams.
- Build and maintain programme-level test plans and strategies that keep squads aligned.
- Work with Product Owners and stakeholders to support end-to-end testing and final sign-off.
- Manage expectations around scope, risk, and release readiness with key stakeholders.
- Develop agile testing approaches, plans, and supporting documentation.
- Support squads with test automation and non-functional testing methods.
- Encourage ongoing improvement across the testing function and wider community.
- Assess requirements and ensure coverage across system, integration, API, and end-to-end test layers.
- Interpret test outcomes, defects, and risk clearly for technical and business audiences.
- Assist with the coordination of complex test environments and test data in integrated systems.
- Help influence testing standards, ways of working, and overall quality across squads.
What you need
- Demonstrated experience leading testing on large or complex programmes or projects.
- Solid understanding of functional, system, integration, API, end-to-end, automation, and performance testing.
- Experience managing testing across multiple squads.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, including the ability to influence senior stakeholders and align diverse groups.
- Ability to create and manage test strategies and plans, including automation and non-functional approaches.
- Experience monitoring risks, issues, and test progress, and escalating when needed.
- Strong capability in estimating, prioritising, and planning testing work.
- Experience handling integrated environments and complex test data.
- Ability to coach and support testers on standards and best practices.
- Practical knowledge of modern automation and API testing tools and approaches such as .NET, REST APIs, Selenium, and BDD.
- Working knowledge of Azure DevOps and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience driving continuous improvement in testing practices.
- Background working with always-on, high-volume, or mission-critical systems.
Nice to have
- Experience in payments, cards, or financial services.
- Experience in enterprise-scale or highly integrated environments.
- Exposure to test simulators such as FINSIM.
- ISTQB certification.
- Exposure to cloud technologies.
