Role summary

The Underwriter position is a full-time opportunity based in the Eastern Region and follows a hybrid working model, combining office-based work with work from home. The role centers on assessing risk, analyzing broker-submitted applications, deciding suitable coverage terms and pricing, and managing a portfolio of accounts. It also includes preparing quotes and proposals, negotiating terms within underwriting standards and profitability goals, and partnering with internal teams to support smooth policy issuance and strong client service.

Key responsibilities

In this role, you will review wholesale broker submissions, evaluate exposure data, and determine the right coverage structure, conditions, and premium levels. You will oversee a book of business, develop quotes and proposals, and negotiate terms while staying aligned with underwriting guidelines. The position also involves working with claims, actuarial, and operations teams to improve service delivery and speed up policy processing. In addition, you will track market developments, maintain productive broker relationships, and help refine underwriting and product strategy.

Qualifications and requirements

Successful candidates should bring strong analytical and numerical skills, especially the ability to interpret financial and exposure information for risk assessment. A solid understanding of commercial insurance is important, with preference for experience in specialty and excess & surplus lines and familiarity with underwriting practices. Clear written and verbal communication skills are needed to explain underwriting decisions and negotiate with brokers. You should also be well organized, able to manage multiple submissions at once, and comfortable working under deadlines in a busy environment. Proficiency with standard business software and underwriting systems is expected, and experience with reporting or data tools is an added advantage. The role calls for someone who can work independently while also collaborating effectively with brokers and internal colleagues. A bachelor’s degree in business, finance, risk management, or a related discipline is required, and professional designations such as CPCU or AU are considered a plus. Prior underwriting or related insurance experience is preferred, particularly in wholesale or specialty markets.
