Role summary
This role is focused on delivering profitable underwriting outcomes through efficient case handling. The successful candidate will make sure underwriting decisions stay within company guidelines, underwriting appetite, and all relevant regulatory obligations. The position also involves working with brokers and internal teams to support divisional strategy, financial goals, and individual targets.
Key responsibilities
- Independently manage renewal and/or new business cases, ensuring all writing remains within appetite and delegated authority.
- Review and handle referral cases from less experienced underwriters or apprentices, while staying within personal authority limits.
- Keep underwriting decisions accurately recorded and fully documented.
- Follow company processes, NUH-prescribed procedures, and established best-practice working methods.
- Support quality assurance activities by carrying out case reviews when needed to confirm technical standards and procedures are being met.
- Contribute to divisional goals around retention, conversion, rate, and loss ratio performance.
- Strengthen the company’s market presence by building and sustaining productive relationships with broking partners.
- Use strong negotiation skills to support business conversion and maintain effective broker relationships.
- Continuously build and update knowledge of relevant technical underwriting topics.
- Collaborate closely with colleagues across the organisation, especially with UK regional offices.
Requirements and qualifications
- At least 2 years of underwriting experience.
- Ability to negotiate in a flexible and appropriate way.
- Strong sales capability.
- Well-developed organisational skills.
- Good risk assessment and judgement.
- Ability to price risk accurately.
- Experience building effective trading relationships.
- Track record of achieving goals and targets.
- Experience working across functions in a matrix-style organisation and building strong working relationships.
- Strong operational efficiency and effectiveness.
- Clear, confident, and effective communication skills.
- Minimum A level standard preferred.
- Professional certification with progress toward Cert CII preferred.
- Ideally experienced in the commercial insurance industry.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a structured, organised, and planned approach to work.
