Role overview
Thermo Fisher Scientific is looking for a Field Applications Scientist to support customers with technical expertise, hands-on training, and application guidance across a range of analytical and scientific technologies. The position is focused on helping customers get the best performance from their instruments and solutions while contributing to the company’s mission of improving health, safety, and environmental outcomes worldwide.
In this role, you will work closely with sales and client teams to deliver product demonstrations, solve application challenges, and provide both pre-sales and post-sales support. You will also act as a trusted scientific resource, assisting customers in refining workflows, adopting new methods, and making better use of their investments.
The position involves collaboration with colleagues across sales, marketing, research and development, and product management to support customer success and business growth through technical excellence.
Work schedule and environment
This is a standard Monday to Friday position. The work environment includes laboratory and office settings, and the role may require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, gloves, a gown, a lab coat, and ear plugs.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical support and application training for analytical and scientific products.
- Partner with sales teams and customers to deliver demonstrations and solution-based discussions.
- Offer both pre-sales and after-sales technical expertise.
- Develop and refine applications to meet customer needs.
- Investigate and resolve complex technical or workflow issues.
- Support customers in improving their processes and maximizing product value.
- Work with cross-functional teams to strengthen customer outcomes and business results.
Requirements
- Either an advanced degree with at least 3 years of relevant experience, or a bachelor’s degree with at least 5 years of relevant experience in analytical instrumentation and applications.
- Preferred academic background in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Materials Science, Molecular Biology, or a closely related field.
- Strong preference for experience with Thermo Fisher systems, especially chromatography and/or mass spectrometry.
- Proven ability to solve technical problems and develop methods.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills with the ability to simplify complex ideas for different audiences.
- Confidence in presenting and delivering training to both technical and non-technical groups.
- Ability to work independently as well as within a team in a goal-driven setting.
- Experience managing projects and handling several priorities at once.
- Willingness to travel up to about 50% within New Zealand and other regions when needed.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and relevant scientific software tools.
- Strong customer focus and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to build productive relationships with both internal stakeholders and external customers.
- Valid driver’s license and passport for travel.
- Comfort working in both direct and matrix reporting environments.
- Enthusiasm for learning and taking on new challenges.
