Role overview

The Biomedical Engineer will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, commissioning, and managing a broad range of medical devices used across multiple clinical areas at Northampton General Hospital.

What you will do

  • Support the full lifecycle of medical equipment, including ongoing maintenance and day-to-day device management across the hospital.
  • Carry out maintenance and calibration tasks, while keeping equipment service records current and accurate.
  • Help ensure all Clinical Engineering-supported devices remain safe to use, deliver value for money, and cause as little disruption to patient care as possible.
  • Train nursing teams and other staff members in the correct and safe use of medical devices.
  • Work independently on technical tasks in clinical and workshop settings, following established procedures to maximise device reliability, availability, and safety.
  • Commission, calibrate, service, and repair a variety of medical equipment, including infusion pumps, patient monitors, ECG recorders, defibrillators, and similar devices.
  • Examine and test equipment, interpret findings to identify faults, and complete the necessary corrective actions.
  • Show users how to operate equipment and apply techniques when this helps resolve a problem.
  • Share investigation outcomes clearly with users, colleagues, and suppliers, while contributing expertise and practical know-how.
  • Maintain detailed electronic records of equipment history and other data used for audit, quality assurance, and performance tracking.
