Role overview
Hutt City Council is seeking an experienced Democracy Advisor to join its Democratic Services team in Lower Hutt, Wellington. This position plays an important part in keeping Council decision-making transparent, compliant and well-run, while supporting elected members and senior leaders with high-quality governance advice.
What the role involves
You will help deliver dependable governance support across Council, committees and community boards. The role is centered on making sure meetings are handled efficiently, legislative obligations are met, and committee chairs have a reliable point of contact for governance guidance.
- Drafting accurate agendas, minutes, reports and other meeting materials.
- Advising on Standing Orders, meeting process and local government law.
- Acting as a key governance support person for committee chairs.
- Developing effective working relationships with elected members, senior leaders and staff.
- Handling sensitive and confidential information with care and integrity.
- Spotting risks and improvement opportunities in democratic services and delivery.
- Helping drive ongoing improvement across the Democratic Services function.
What the council is looking for
The ideal candidate will have a background supporting governance, democratic services or political advisory work, along with a strong interest in public service and sound decision-making. This is a varied, fast-paced position suited to someone who enjoys problem-solving and shifting priorities.
- Hands-on experience in governance, democratic services or a political advisory environment.
- Working knowledge of local government legislation and governance best practice.
- Experience producing agendas, minutes and formal meeting records.
- Strong writing, editing and report-preparation skills.
- Excellent organisation and the ability to juggle competing demands.
- Confidence in building trusted relationships with elected members and senior stakeholders.
- A relevant qualification in governance, business administration or a similar field.
- A current New Zealand driver licence.
Additional experience that would help
Experience with Resolve, Diligent Board Management Software or a comparable governance platform would be an advantage.
