Role overview

As Assistant Accountant, you will be part of the Central Accounting team and work closely with the Transam New Zealand Accountant – Finance. The role is central to the month-end close and consolidation process, with a five-day turnaround required for submission to the US parent company. This is a position for someone who values accuracy, speed, and meaningful contribution in a high-performing environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Code non-PO accounts payable invoices, check the accuracy of coding, and make sure costs are allocated correctly, including split-cost arrangements.
  • Carry out bank reconciliations and support day-to-day cash management, including monitoring balances and assisting with cash-related transactions.
  • Handle intercompany recharge processing across divisions and maintain supporting records for allocations.
  • Manage fixed assets through additions, disposals, and depreciation entries.
  • Prepare month-end accruals, prepayments, and the related journal entries.
  • Complete assigned balance sheet reconciliations to a consistently high standard.
  • Support intercompany reconciliations and netting, ensuring differences are resolved quickly and balances remain accurate.
  • Assist with reviewing monthly management accounts by preparing financial analysis and commentary.
  • Prepare and submit GST and FBT returns.
  • Ensure all financial transactions are processed on time, accurately, and in line with company controls and policies.
  • Prepare purchase order reports and follow up on actions where required.
  • Assist with audit preparation and related tasks.
  • Support improvements to financial systems, workflows, and transaction processes to strengthen efficiency and control.
  • Look for opportunities to improve processes and working methods.
  • Provide financial data and reporting support to departments as needed.

Requirements

  • A qualification in accounting or a related discipline, along with a strong understanding of core financial principles; a bachelor’s degree would be an advantage.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a similar accounting role, with practical knowledge of ledgers, reconciliations, and reporting.
  • Exposure to ERP systems, with Oracle considered beneficial.
  • Intermediate Excel ability, including formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis.
  • Strong time management and the ability to juggle multiple priorities under pressure.
  • Clear communication and solid organisational skills, with a dependable and proactive approach.
  • Comfort working both independently and as part of a team.
  • Good financial judgement and strong analytical thinking.
  • A solutions-oriented mindset with effective problem-solving skills.
  • Confidence engaging with stakeholders at different levels, including peers and senior leaders.
  • High attention to detail, a focus on outcomes, and strong motivation to perform well.
