About the role
Mercury is a forward-looking New Zealand organisation delivering energy and telecommunications services, with a strong commitment to renewable energy and a more sustainable future. The business is growing and evolving, and this role has been created to help strengthen the way the Customer team is structured for what comes next.
As Brand Operations Manager, you will act as the central brand authority and the creative driver behind Mercury’s brand consistency, quality, and evolution. The role blends brand stewardship, operational leadership, and people management, with responsibility for the systems and standards that keep brand work effective across every channel and touchpoint.
You will also lead a small design team, work with external partners, and partner closely with wider marketing and business stakeholders to make sure brand execution supports campaigns, digital delivery, and Mercury’s broader strategy.
What you will do
- Set the standard for Mercury’s brand identity and design output, ensuring the brand remains consistent, relevant, and strong everywhere it appears.
- Create and maintain the governance structures, review steps, approval pathways, and working practices that support high-quality creative work at scale.
- Lead and support a small group of designers and external collaborators, giving direction, coaching, and guidance so the team can deliver its best work.
- Act as an internal brand advisor and educator, helping stakeholders understand brand requirements and building brand capability across the organisation.
- Oversee brand operations, including budgeting, resourcing, and ongoing improvement of brand processes.
- Support internal brand activation so the Mercury brand is experienced by employees as well as customers.
- Own the brand governance approach for Mercury’s website, including standards for brand expression across pages, regular audits, approval of major digital changes, and integration of brand thinking into digital and content planning.
- Work in partnership with Brand & Marketing and other teams to ensure the brand foundation supports campaign delivery and strategic objectives.
What you will bring
- Background in brand operations, brand management, or senior design leadership, with a strong understanding of brand identity and governance.
- Experience designing and improving operating models such as approval flows, feedback loops, and ways of working that improve creative outcomes.
- People leadership experience, including coaching and developing creative teams.
- Commercial confidence, including the ability to manage budgets and allocate resources effectively.
- Consultative influence skills, with the ability to align stakeholders and lift understanding of brand standards.
- Strong creative judgement and a clear view of what high-quality brand work looks like over time.
- Experience working with digital and website teams on brand governance, including UX/UI standards, page templates, and content oversight.
- A collaborative and organised approach, with the credibility to be the go-to brand expert internally.
