Role overview

Pacifica Housing is hiring a Casual Cook for its senior living setting in Nanaimo, BC. This position reports to the Manager of Pacifica Seniors Lodge and may also require work at Nikao and other sites as needed. The role is part of an on-call arrangement under Pacifica Housing’s policy, with one casual opening available.

Compensation for this role is $25.88 to $28.21 per hour. The role is unionized under BCGEU. The application closing date is July 10, 2026 at 4:00 PM.

Primary purpose of the role

The chosen candidate will work as part of a team supporting vulnerable seniors. In addition to regular kitchen duties, the cook will help ensure that food service runs smoothly, efficiently, and to a high standard of quality.

Key duties

Prepare and plate meals to a strong standard of quality and service for residents.
Follow correct food-handling practices and meet all meal-service timelines.
Maintain cleanliness and sanitation in line with health department requirements.
Communicate positively and professionally with residents and team members.
Work with other cooks to support breakfast, lunch, and dinner preparation.
Prepare resident meals according to the daily menu.
Keep health and safety standards in place while working alongside FoodSafe-trained coworkers.
Store and serve food at proper temperatures.
Assist with weekly food and supply ordering.
Follow all food safety procedures and standards.
Keep kitchens, coolers, and freezers clean, tidy, and well organized.
Ensure meals are prepared and served in a hygienic and timely manner.

Education and experience

Applicants should have completed high school, with some formal culinary school training preferred. At least one year of experience working as a cook is required, including exposure to large-quantity menu planning, food preparation, and presentation. Experience in a non-profit housing setting is an asset.

Skills and personal attributes

The ideal candidate brings excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, communicates clearly in English both verbally and in writing, and stays effective under pressure during busy periods. The role also calls for a service-minded approach, teamwork, strong organization, the ability to juggle multiple priorities, and a warm, friendly attitude with a sense of humor. A genuine interest in supporting adults living with physical and mental health challenges is important.

Additional requirements

WHMIS certification is mandatory. Candidates must be able to work all shifts relevant to the position. A valid driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle, and minimum $2 million business-class liability insurance are also required.

Because the organization supports vulnerable populations, successful applicants must pass a Vulnerable Sectors Criminal Record Check completed by the Ministry of Justice. Any job offer depends on the applicant providing proof of this check before starting work.

As this position is posted externally at the same time, existing members of the collective bargaining unit will be considered first for appointment.
