Role overview
Rio Tinto is hiring a Charterer to join its global chartering function in Singapore. This position supports the chartering team and works closely with commodity business units to deliver shipping solutions that are safe, efficient and on time in a fast-moving market.

Key accountabilities
- Lead discussions and finalise charter agreements with vessel owners and brokers to secure strong commercial results.
- Own the full contract journey, from negotiation through execution oversight and performance improvement.
- Develop and maintain productive commercial relationships with shipowners and broker networks.
- Identify and act on third-party freight trading opportunities by engaging market participants, taking measured positions and managing freight exposure to improve portfolio performance.
- Support market intelligence efforts, including freight reporting and analysis that guide business decisions.
- Work with internal stakeholders to improve supply chain value, vessel performance and freight choices.
- Track contract delivery, ensure vessel nominations happen on time and resolve issues quickly.
- Build a strong understanding of mine-to-customer supply chain flows.
- Work with the Vetting team to strengthen vessel safety and operational capability.
- Partner with the Performance team to help deliver decarbonisation goals.
- Follow governance requirements and compliance standards at all times.
Candidate profile
The role is suited to someone with a commercially minded approach, strong ownership and accountability, and the confidence to work across negotiations and stakeholder groups in a shipping environment.
Education and experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Maritime Studies or a related field.
- 3 to 5 years of experience in chartering, trading or a commercial role is strongly preferred.
- Prior involvement in negotiations and/or commercial decision-making.
- Good knowledge of shipping markets preferred.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience using IMOS systems.

Work environment
The Commercial function connects product groups, customers and suppliers across mine to market. It brings together Sales & Marketing and Trading, Global Procurement, and Marine & Logistics to buy, sell and move materials while focusing on safe, sustainable and customer-centred outcomes. The Singapore hub works with teams in Chicago, Frankfurt, Antwerp, Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo and Seoul.
