The opportunity
The studio is seeking a Creative Director for a 3–6 month contract to cover a planned leave. This role is ideal for someone who is equally comfortable leading creative vision and actively contributing hands-on design work.
The right person will be confident steering client conversations, shaping the direction of projects, and bringing a distinct point of view while helping the team produce its best work.
What you will do
- Set and maintain the creative direction for all active projects, from early concepts through final delivery.
- Prepare and pitch ideas to clients and internal stakeholders.
- Make decisive creative calls and clearly explain the thinking behind them.
- Ensure deliverables align with the client brief, brand guidelines, and ONBOX’s quality standards.
- Create concept decks, moodboards, and presentation materials personally.
- Design directly in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite, establishing a strong visual benchmark.
- Review work in progress and provide practical, specific art direction.
- Improve the overall output of the design team by working closely with designers and demonstrating strong execution.
- Mentor designers through active collaboration and hands-on guidance.
- Encourage ideas while upholding a high creative standard.
- Collaborate with strategy to develop insight-led creative solutions.
- Work with project managers to keep quality and timelines on track.
- Present creative work to clients and communicate the vision with clarity and confidence.
What the company is looking for
They are seeking someone with at least 6 years of design experience, including a minimum of 2 years in a Creative Director or senior Art Director role. The ideal candidate should have a portfolio that shows direct authorship rather than only oversight.
Strong brand identity experience is essential, with packaging and digital work considered an advantage. Candidates should be fluent in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite, comfortable adopting AI tools where useful, and experienced in an agency or design studio environment.
The role also calls for someone who can confidently persuade clients, explain creative decisions to junior designers, and adapt their communication to different audiences.
Work arrangement and contract details
This position is based in Vancouver, British Columbia and follows a hybrid schedule of 4 days in the office and 1 day remote each week.
It is a contract role for 3–6 months. The working schedule is Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. A work laptop will be provided.
Compensation is annualized at CAD 110,000 to CAD 150,000, depending on experience.
ONBOX notes that strong working relationships matter, and contract roles may lead to future conversations about continued collaboration.
