Custodian

Job overview

The custodian is responsible for keeping assigned spaces clean, sanitary, and orderly. This role also supports safe housekeeping practices, proper waste handling, and routine upkeep of the work area.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out general janitorial work across assigned areas.
• Complete all tasks listed on the daily schedule.
• Handle hazardous waste duties such as collecting, sorting, classifying, storing, shipping, receiving, labeling, cleaning, recycling, and packaging special and hazardous waste materials.
• Use motorized cleaning equipment as required.
• Maintain day-to-day cleanliness and upkeep of the assigned location.
• Escalate incidents and unsafe conditions to a supervisor.
• Follow all safety rules, procedures, and company policies.
• Intervene when unsafe behavior is observed in self or others.
• Work collaboratively with team members.
• Complete repetitive work tasks as needed.
• Keep the work area tidy and organized.
• Follow company protocols, rules, and standards consistently.
• Accept direction and respond appropriately to supervision.
• Communicate professionally with leads, supervisors, coworkers, managers, and customers.
• Step in to help during staffing shortages.
• Assist the shift lead with punch-list completion.
• Use the required personal protective equipment correctly.
• Maintain a professional appearance and manner.
• Support customer service and satisfaction goals.
• Understand reporting systems and environmental practices.

Qualifications

Applicants should be able to perform all essential duties safely and effectively. The role is suitable for someone with practical housekeeping or custodial experience, though formal education is not required. Training or experience of 3 to 6 months is preferred, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.

Certifications and licenses

• A valid driver's license may be required.
• Completion of safety and task-training certification is required.
• Forklift certification may be required.

Skills and abilities

• Bilingual communication is an advantage.
• Ability to read and follow instructions, procedures, manuals, and related documents.
• Clear verbal and written communication.
• Working knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment.
• Ability to maintain and care for cleaning equipment.
• Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and compounds, including safe and efficient use.

Physical demands and work environment

This job may require sitting, talking, and listening for parts of the shift. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Schedule

The regular schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with weekends required as needed.

Pay and benefits

The hourly wage for this role is between $14 and $15. The employer offers a comprehensive benefits package.
