Data Center Technician

Role overview

Microsoft is seeking a Data Center Technician to support hardware deployment and operations within its cloud infrastructure. In this role, you will prepare, install, troubleshoot, and retire equipment while following documented procedures and safety standards. The position also offers exposure to core data center processes, opportunities to build mentoring capability, and hands-on experience with security and data handling practices.

The Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) organization supports the infrastructure behind services such as Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Microsoft Azure. Responsibilities

• Carry out diagnostics and fault-finding using standard methods, determine root causes quickly, and replace defective parts with limited disruption to customers and business operations.
• Complete post-work inspections and confirm that grounding, staging, labeling, and cabling comply with safety requirements, deployment standards, and planned network design tasks.
• Remove hardware for straightforward refreshes or changes, such as memory upgrades and rebuilds, by following standard operating procedures and using minimal direction.
• Log, communicate, and escalate incidents to the relevant data center operations managers, technician leads, and engineering specialists as required.
• Support and guide fellow technicians when tasks are difficult or complex.
• Finish all role-related training and learn from experienced technicians through observation and on-the-job practice.
• Contribute to a positive team culture by sharing updates, participating in team meetings, asking questions, and staying informed about team progress.
• Take ownership of service quality, task completeness, user experience, and the condition of data center facilities.
• Demonstrate Microsoft’s values and culture in daily work.

Requirements

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent qualification, along with foundational knowledge of computer hardware and components.
• Relevant experience supporting IT equipment or similar technology.
• Ability to satisfy Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements.
• Successful completion of Microsoft Cloud background screening at hiring/transfer and every two years thereafter.
• Preferred: experience working with IT equipment or related technologies.
• Preferred: certifications such as CompTIA A+, Server+, Network+, or Basic Structure Cabling (BSC).

Additional information

Typical base pay for this position in Germany is €48,200 to €57,800 per year for both Data Center Technicians ATR-B and ATR-C. Some roles may also qualify for benefits and additional compensation.
