About the opportunity

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is offering a permanent Commerce, Finance and Economics position based in Pōneke | Wellington, with a planned start in February 2027. The role begins with a starting salary of $69,606 and sits within Te Reanga Pito Mata | Emerging Professionals Programme.

This programme is designed to stretch, develop, and support early-career professionals. From the outset, you will move through different teams to build broad experience and contribute to the systems and services that help improve New Zealand’s transport network. The role supports the organisation’s customer promise of a land transport system that connects people, products, and places for a thriving Aotearoa.

The team and rotations

Te Ama | Commercial and Corporate group provides specialist advice and support to NZTA and the wider land transport sector, helping the organisation operate efficiently and effectively. Through the programme, you may rotate across areas such as Finance, Procurement, Organisational Performance, or other commerce-focused teams. Each placement is intended to build capability, expose you to important operational functions, and widen your professional perspective.

What you will bring

You should be working towards, or already hold, a bachelor’s degree or higher in Commerce with Finance & Economics. Applicants need to have completed their highest qualification by February 2027 and must have graduated within the last two years. A minimum B grade average in your current or completed degree is required.

You will also need an understanding of, or a genuine willingness to build knowledge of, te Tiriti o Waitangi and its significance in the public sector. NZTA values Te Ao Māori, Te Tiriti, and Tikanga Māori, and is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion across its work.

Programme benefits

This is a two-year development journey that includes at least three work rotations aligned to your stream. The programme acts as your home base while you are embedded in different teams across NZTA, giving you guidance, development support, and structured learning throughout the experience.
