Job Overview

Empress Emergency Medical Services is hiring an EMT-Basic to support both emergency and non-emergency patient transport in New York, NY. This role sits within the Operations department and reports to the Director of Operations. It is a non-exempt position focused on delivering high-quality patient care, safe transport, and professional customer service in pre-hospital, hospital, and inter-facility settings.

Core Responsibilities

The EMT-Basic will work alongside supervisors, fire and police agencies, patients, families, and other medical personnel to provide supportive and definitive care as appropriate within the EMT-B scope of practice. The position involves patient assessment, treatment, documentation, transport, equipment upkeep, and compliance with company and state requirements.

• Evaluate patients, determine priorities, and carry out care plans within approved treatment protocols and the current standard of care.
• Document all patient care activities and EMS responses clearly and accurately.
• Complete all company and New York State paperwork without omission.
• Keep equipment, vehicles, supplies, daily logs, and patient care records maintained as required.
• Operate company vehicles and equipment in line with policy while supporting a safe and organized work environment.
• Arrive on time and be prepared for extended shifts, including mandatory overtime when assigned.
• Work across different shift patterns as needed and follow all company policies and procedures.
• Attend required continuing medical education sessions, updates, and staff meetings.
• Follow uniform and standard equipment rules at all times.
• Support community education and public information efforts that promote EMT services and Empress programs.
• Perform assigned duties in environments that may involve confined spaces, mobile work settings, hazardous conditions, noise, temperature changes, and exposure to blood or body fluids.
• Use proper personal protection when treating communicable diseases and take precautions around violent or abusive patients.
• Carry out other duties listed in the employee manual or assigned by management.

Clinical Duties and Technical Skills

• Take a focused patient history and perform a rapid physical assessment.
• Conduct patient interviews and BLS-level assessments.
• Provide oral suctioning, airway support, BVM ventilation, oxygen delivery, and CPR.
• Use a semi-automatic defibrillator as required.
• Apply spinal motion restriction, immobilization, traction, and splinting techniques.
• Assist with extrication and manage triage in multiple-casualty situations.
• Support emergency childbirth situations.
• Apply crisis intervention and effective communication skills.
• Understand and work within the Incident Command System.
• Drive safely in both emergency and non-emergency conditions.

Employment Conditions

Employees are hired on a probationary basis for 180 days. The role may require work in both indoor and outdoor settings, frequent face-to-face interaction, movement in vehicles and stations, and physical demands including lifting up to 150 pounds alone or up to 300 pounds with a two-person crew. The job also requires the ability to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and use close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision with the ability to adjust focus.

Requirements for Employment

• Active New York State EMT-B certification and current CPR/BCLS certification, with continued maintenance of all required credentials and any local-region requirements.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record that meets the insurer’s underwriting standards, maintained throughout employment.
• Negative drug screening; testing arrangements will be coordinated by Empress Ambulance Service.
• Successful completion of pre-employment screening, including drug testing, background check, and CPAT.
• Ability to continue certification maintenance through NYS rectification classes when needed and participation in company in-service training and updates.

Additional Information

The role includes routine exposure to fumes, odors, hazardous conditions, electrical and mechanical equipment, and potentially violent situations. The EMT-Basic is expected to remain safety-conscious at all times and follow New York State Department of Health EMS Bureau guidance for personal protection.
