About the role

Ferrous Processing and Trading (FPT), a Cleveland-Cliffs business, is hiring immediately for a General Laborer in Windsor, Ontario. FPT is recognized across North America as a major processor, buyer, seller, and recycler of scrap metal, supplying material to the region’s metals sector. In this role, you will help process scrap metal using a range of tools and equipment at the Windsor site.

Key duties

• Follow all safety procedures, wear the required protective gear, remove hazards when identified, and keep the work area clean and orderly.
• Move materials in and out of storage, production zones, docks, delivery trucks, staging areas, or containers by hand or with mobile equipment.
• Separate mixed recycled materials and metals, isolating higher-grade metal and removing anything that does not meet standards.
• Use and care for mobile equipment such as forklifts, skid steers, street sweepers, and water trucks.
• Carry out physically demanding work with tools such as hand tools, torches, banders, chop saws, alligator shears, sawzalls, and wire snips.
• Recognize scrap by metal grade, material type, and any unwanted substances present.
• Drain fluids from incoming materials or vehicles when necessary.
• Clean plant equipment and support general housekeeping duties.
• Assist mechanics with equipment and plant maintenance tasks.
• Communicate with customers and drivers to guide or support them as needed.
• Complete other general labor duties assigned from time to time.

What you need

• You must be 18 years of age or older.
• Basic reading, writing, and math ability is required.
• Prior experience with mobile equipment is an advantage.
• Strong communication and people skills are important.
• You should be able to keep accurate records.
• You must be able to understand and follow both verbal and written instructions.
• The job requires climbing ladders or steps to access items.
• You need the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• You should work well with coworkers and members of the public.
• You must be comfortable working in conditions that can include dust, dirt, vibration, severe temperatures, and changing weather.
• Pre-employment background, physical, and hair drug screening are mandatory.

Compensation and benefits

This is a union role with starting pay of $24.34.
