Role overview
The Lead ESF Engineer will oversee the engineering, installation, testing, and commissioning activities for GIS systems used in high-voltage substation projects. This position is accountable for making sure all work aligns with the required standards, project-specific requirements, and safety expectations. The role also involves close coordination with equipment manufacturers, EPC contractors, suppliers, and utility stakeholders to clear technical issues and help deliver dependable, compliant GIS installations.
Engineering and design
- Check and sign off GIS engineering designs, drawings, calculations, and technical documents.
- Confirm that GIS systems meet the relevant IEC, IEEE, ANSI, and utility requirements.
- Examine single-line diagrams, protection arrangements, interlocking logic, and substation layouts.
- Liaise with OEMs, EPC contractors, consultants, and utility representatives on technical topics.
- Assess equipment specifications, datasheets, and procurement documentation for GIS packages.
- Take part in technical assessment of vendor submissions and clarification discussions.
Construction and installation
- Oversee GIS installation work to ensure it follows approved methods and quality expectations.
- Review and approve method statements, inspection and test plans, and construction procedures.
- Make sure assembly, alignment, gas filling, and equipment testing are carried out correctly.
- Assist site teams in solving engineering issues and other field challenges.
- Ensure adherence to safety rules and project HSSE requirements.
Testing and commissioning
- Direct GIS pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
- Review commissioning methods, test records, and punch lists.
- Witness and validate high-voltage tests, partial discharge tests, SF6 gas quality tests, functional and interlocking checks, protection relay testing, SCADA integration testing, and energization activities.
- Coordinate with transmission operators and utility representatives during energization.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in engineering is required.
- At least 7 years of experience in construction or energy projects is expected.

This role is based in Dammam, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia and is a full-time, onsite position.
