Lifting Supervisor

Role overview

The Lifting Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing personnel lift activities and ensuring that lifting operations are planned and executed safely, in line with site and equipment requirements.

Core responsibilities

• Confirm that all required inspections of cranes, derricks, and platforms have been completed before personnel lifting begins.
• Check the work area for hazards and report any unsafe conditions to the employer before carrying out the lift.
• Identify and control risks such as excessive load or radius, overhead obstructions, electrical transmission lines, hazardous locations, weak ground or support conditions, wind and weather issues, unstable conditions, and any other possible danger.
• Ensure the crane base is level according to the manufacturer’s guidance and never exceeds one percent out of level.
• For boom-mounted platforms, verify that the platform is installed as required by the manufacturer or a qualified person.
• Make sure the combined weight of the lifted load, rigging, platform, personnel, tools, and materials does not go beyond fifty percent of the crane or derrick rated capacity under the planned operating conditions.
• Do not permit the platform rating or the reduced crane/derrick load rating to be exceeded when loads are moved to the hoisted platform.
• Confirm that a trial lift has been completed and that the platform is loaded to at least the expected operating weight during the test.
• Prevent travel of the crane or derrick with personnel in the platform, except when operating on fixed rails or runways.
• Verify that the platform is properly secured to the crane or derrick and that the load line is neither attached to nor wrapped around the platform.
• Keep workers from walking or standing beneath a raised platform.
• Limit the number of people on the platform to only those required for the task.
• Consult the crane/derrick and platform manufacturer instructions for operation details, while treating the rules in this role as the minimum required standard.
• Ensure the right number of signal persons, ground crew members, and platform occupants are available to complete the lift safely.
• When using suspended or boom-attached platforms without boom motion controls, assign one occupant as the platform signal person to communicate with the operator and any other designated signal persons.

Candidate profile

• A High School Diploma or an equivalent qualification is required.
• Applicants should have at least 10 years of rigging experience in the construction industry, including a minimum of 5 years in a supervisory role as a Lifting Supervisor. Gulf region experience for 5 years will be considered an advantage.
• Strong English communication skills are necessary, including the ability to read and write reports.
• Good understanding of common procedural lapses in lifting activities.
• Knowledge of hazards related to unsecured loads and load slippage.
• Awareness of hazards involved in crane-based lifting operations.
• Ability to read and follow lifting plans accurately.
• Understanding of risk assessment principles.
• Familiarity with lifting gear used in lifting operations.
• Knowledge of recommended rigging and slinging methods.
• Must be adequately trained and experienced to work as an appointed person or central point of control for lifting operations.
• Strong administrative and supervision abilities to schedule, monitor, and control lifting staff, equipment, and operations.
• Certification from TUV, VELOCY, or ABS is preferred; if certification is unavailable, the candidate must have at least 10 years of rigging experience and 3 years of experience as a Lifting or Rigging Supervisor.
