Post Doctoral Fellow

Role overview

This opportunity is part of a multi-grant research programme focused on genomic epidemiology and pathogen genomics. The appointed researcher will carry out large-scale analyses of bacterial and viral genomes, using whole-genome sequencing and genomic surveillance to study how pathogens evolve, spread, and develop antimicrobial resistance where relevant.

Key research areas

The role covers comparative genomics, phylogenetic analysis, outbreak tracing, and monitoring clinically important bacterial strains, viral variants, and antimicrobial resistance plasmids across human, animal, food, and environmental settings under a One Health approach. The postdoctoral fellow will help build integrated genomic surveillance systems that strengthen public health, infection prevention, pandemic readiness, and antimicrobial resistance management.

Collaboration and support

The selected candidate will work alongside a second lab-based postdoctoral researcher and contribute to sequencing activities needed to achieve the goals of both projects. The role also includes supporting current PhD students working in related areas and collaborating closely with faculty in the Infection Research Unit to advance shared research objectives and personal scientific development.

Requirements

• A PhD from a well-regarded university in genomics or a closely related field.
• Some experience handling assigned research tasks and beginning to manage independent workload.
• Commitment to working in a cooperative and encouraging team environment.
• Strong spoken and written English communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively within a team handling multiple priorities, deadlines, and competing demands.
• Good analytical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving abilities.
