Project Manager

Role overview

The Ministry of Justice in New Zealand is looking for a seasoned Project Manager to steer planning, delivery, and programme coordination across important justice-focused initiatives, including work connected to the creation of a new firearms regulator. This is a fast-moving role for someone who can handle complexity, coordinate multiple moving parts, and work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.

You will take ownership of projects from early planning through delivery, with a strong emphasis on risk oversight, progress tracking, and reporting. The role requires delivering outcomes within tight deadlines while staying aligned to programme goals.

This is a 12-month fixed-term position.

Key duties

• Drive detailed project planning and reporting for complex public sector work.
• Coordinate delivery across multiple workstreams while keeping activities aligned to programme priorities and resource use efficient.
• Help maintain strong governance arrangements that support informed decisions and effective oversight.
• Develop and sustain productive relationships within the team and with a broad range of stakeholders.

Skills and experience

To succeed in this position, you should bring the following:

• Hands-on experience managing large, complicated projects, ideally in a government or public policy setting.
• A qualification in project management, or comparable practical experience.
• A solid grasp of public sector structures, processes, and accountability requirements.
• A collaborative style, inclusiveness, and the political awareness needed to manage relationships well.

Salary

The offered salary range for this role is between NZD 112,766 and NZD 145,388, depending on skills and experience.
