Role overview

Scotiabank is looking for a highly specialized Data Scientist to join its Global Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning group in Toronto. The position plays a key role in creating and rolling out next-generation AI and ML solutions across the bank’s business areas, with a strong focus on large language models and document intelligence.

The successful candidate will help shape the bank’s AI/ML direction by using advanced Gemini prompting methods and strong Python development skills to address complex business problems and unlock insights from unstructured information.

What you will do

In this role, you will work as part of a broader AI/ML team to build products that create value for both the organization and its customers. You will partner with data scientists, data engineers, AI/ML product managers, and software developers to understand business needs and convert them into scalable production-ready solutions. You will also work with live models and contribute to the development of new, high-impact AI/ML capabilities.

You will need to factor the bank’s risk appetite and risk culture into your decisions when developing and deploying models.

Technical responsibilities

• Create, test, and deploy high-performing models for document understanding use cases such as information extraction and classification.
• Develop and maintain strong Python code to clean, transform, process, and analyze large structured and unstructured document sets, including reliable data pipelines.
• Build and evaluate specialized machine learning models with attention to accuracy, fairness, and scalability.
• Work with data engineers and software developers to move document intelligence solutions into production in a stable and efficient way.
• Keep current with developments in generative AI, Python libraries, machine learning practices, and document AI, while supporting research and development using design thinking and advanced techniques.

Collaboration and strategy

• Contribute to analytical use cases that support multiple business lines and deliver products that benefit both customers and the bank.
• Work with stakeholders to define and promote machine learning and artificial intelligence best practices across the organization.
• Apply the bank’s risk considerations when making decisions about model design, development, and deployment.
• Partner smoothly with data scientists, data engineers, software engineers, and ML product owners to deliver scalable AI/ML products across the enterprise.
