Senior Engineer, Embedded Software R&D

Role overview

This position is for a senior embedded software engineer working on research and development for medical devices used in surgical settings. The successful candidate will contribute to the planning, design, coding, and implementation of embedded software for products supporting Stryker’s electrosurgery portfolio. The work will involve solving technical problems, creating design outputs, and helping deliver software that supports surgeons and healthcare teams in performing procedures safely and effectively.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and carry out prototyping and bench testing activities, or define how they should be performed.
• Investigate technical issues, identify possible fixes, and compare options against component and subsystem needs.
• Perform research and studies that inform product design decisions.
• Convert design inputs into engineering specifications and create designs at the component and subsystem level.
• Estimate development effort and time needed for assigned coding work to support project planning.
• Create new software components using appropriate design approaches and patterns.
• Prepare and review project documentation, including requirement, design, architecture, bug, and test materials, with project teams.
• Write and refine software components based on defined requirements and architecture.
• Lead code reviews for system components while following design principles, coding standards, and best practices.

Business and product understanding

• Show strong awareness of customer needs and design inputs.
• Demonstrate solid understanding of the product’s intended use and the related clinical procedures.
• Build familiarity with how the financial models are structured.

Compliance and quality responsibilities

• Apply relevant industry standards, design requirements, and test strategies aligned with regulatory expectations.
• Independently prepare or improve engineering records such as the Design History File.
• Follow R&D processes, including design controls and risk management, within the Quality Management System.

Collaboration and general expectations

• Work closely with R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, Marketing, and Project Management teams to support successful delivery.
• Absorb procedures, policies, systems, processes, and technologies quickly.
• Handle complex problems using advanced knowledge and prior experience.
• Take ownership of tasks, prioritize effectively, and work with limited supervision.
• Build working relationships and influence peers constructively.

Minimum qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
• At least 2 years of relevant work experience.

Preferred technical and process experience

• Strong programming ability in C and C++.
• Ability to create new components using suitable software design concepts and patterns.
• Experience working with integrated development environments for software projects.
• Experience with static analysis, dynamic analysis, memory management, code coverage, and related software analysis tools.
• Exposure to integration and deployment workflows, preferably with ST microcontrollers.
• Experience estimating implementation effort and time for coding tasks.
• Familiarity with the software development life cycle.
• Experience using application lifecycle management and traceability tools.
• Knowledge of regulatory and compliance standards applied within the SDLC.
• Ability to design, develop, code, test, debug, and maintain embedded software with minimal supervision.
