Senior Staff Software Engineer

Role overview

We are seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer to join the Auckland team. This position focuses on creating dependable systems and intuitive user interfaces with clean, thoroughly tested code. You will also play an important part in technical conversations, code reviews, and architecture choices, helping strengthen the engineering culture and maintain a high standard for quality and scalability.

What you will do

• Spend a large share of your time building software, including writing code, reviewing code, resolving bugs and difficult issues, pairing with other engineers, responding to incidents, and reverse-engineering where needed.
• Participate in planning and architecture work such as estimating effort, working with product teams, and shaping MVPs.
• Share knowledge through research, chapter reviews, meetups, coaching, and mentoring that helps other developers grow.
• Support the team by contributing to shared libraries, open-source work, and the documentation and evolution of development best practices.
• Contribute beyond your immediate responsibilities when needed to help the wider organisation meet its goals.

What we are looking for

The ideal candidate brings senior-level experience as a principal, staff, or tech lead engineer in frontend, backend, or full-stack roles, along with lessons learned from both successes and setbacks that improve decision-making. You should have a strong command of modern web application development, tools, and techniques, plus substantial hands-on experience in either frontend or backend engineering.

If you specialise in frontend, you should have built user interfaces with modern frameworks that consume APIs. If you specialise in backend, you should have designed and delivered RESTful APIs and worked with data storage layers. In either case, you should understand HTTP, security fundamentals, and how frontend and backend systems work together in a full-stack environment. Experience delivering architectural change in large, complex systems is also important.
