Role overview
This is a strong opportunity for an enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist trainee to join the Biochemistry Department Network within Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Services. The position is based at University Hospital Coventry, part of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, a large and busy major trauma centre.
The laboratory is UKAS ISO15189:2022 accredited and holds IBMS training status. The Trust is a major teaching organisation with a reputation for modern facilities, research, and innovation.
What the role involves
- Carry out routine and specialist diagnostic work on patient and environmental samples that may contain infectious material, following approved procedures and working under supervision.
- Use both manual and automated methods on a rota basis while maintaining high medical and scientific standards.
- Interpret diagnostic test results and escalate technical or analytical issues appropriately when non-conformance occurs.
- Enter data accurately and promptly into the laboratory computer system and/or automated analysers using a workstation.
- Prepare reports in electronic form or communicate them verbally to authorised staff when appropriate, under supervision.
- Check the quality of outputs and maintain the required internal records.
- Take part in internal and external quality assurance activity, along with vertical and horizontal audits, as directed by senior colleagues.
- Work towards laboratory performance targets set by senior staff.
Training and service expectations
After completing the relevant training, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the 24/7 Biochemistry service.
Pay and progression
The post is paid at 75% of the top of Band 5, which is equivalent to £28,347. Once the registration portfolio has been completed, the postholder will move into a substantive Band 5 role.
