Assistant Driller

About the Role

H&P views its workforce as the core of the business. The Assistant Driller supports the Driller by completing assigned work efficiently and on time. In this position, you may step in for the Driller during drilling and tripping activities and help manage the drilling crew while following company procedures, job instructions, and KCA DEUTAG quality and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee and participate in keeping the rig area orderly, clean, and well maintained.
• Look after drilling tools and equipment to keep them in proper working condition.
• Guide and assist the drilling crew in preparing equipment for use.
• Before a rig move, direct the loading of rig equipment under the instruction of the Tool Pusher and Driller.
• Ensure drilling equipment is stored correctly and safely.
• Be ready to step in as Derrickman whenever the Driller asks.
• Examine the derrick/mast and related equipment, log inspection findings, and address defects after Tool Pusher approval.
• Monitor the condition of sheaves in the derrick/mast and ensure they are properly maintained.
• Check that the drill string remains in good condition.
• Supervise rig-floor handling, especially when picking up or setting down drilling equipment.
• Serve as a substitute at the brake when pulling out, running casing, or drilling through a non-productive zone.
• Know the client’s kick-control rules and apply them when directed by the Driller.
• Carry out any other task assigned by the Driller or Tool Pusher, provided it is within your competence.

Experience and Skills

This role calls for at least 5 years of experience in a supervisory capacity within drilling operations.

• IWCF Well Control Certification or an equivalent qualification such as Wellsharp.
• Banksman/Slinger certification.
• Strong technical knowledge and hands-on expertise in the area of drilling operations.
• Ability to train, coach, mentor, and support learning among multicultural teams.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Energetic, proactive leadership style with the ability to influence culture and performance.
• Excellent spoken and written communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with others.
• Self-driven, able to work independently, and also contribute well as part of a team.
