Data Scientist, Baseball Analytics

Department Overview

The Baseball Analytics group is the quantitative research and data science function inside Baseball Operations. Its work centers on building statistical models, machine learning systems, and analytical products that guide choices around player acquisition, player development, and player optimization. The team’s day-to-day work includes forecasting, applied research, experimentation, and translating technical results into clear baseball insights.

Role Summary

The Boston Red Sox are looking for a Data Scientist to join the Baseball Analytics department and help create, test, and improve predictive models that strengthen decision-making across Baseball Operations. This is a collaborative role in a fast-moving, highly analytical environment, working closely with the Baseball Analytics team and other Baseball Operations partners to shape player personnel decisions and strategic direction.

The position is suited to someone with strong analytical ability, a solid grasp of baseball, and the skill to explain technical ideas to non-technical audiences. The exact level, scope, and compensation will depend on the chosen candidate’s background and experience. Candidates at different experience levels are welcome to apply.

Compensation and Benefits

The expected salary range for this role is $75,000 to $100,000, depending on relevant experience and internal equity. Full-time employees are eligible for a benefits package that includes healthcare coverage, retirement plans, paid time off, and additional benefits.

Key Responsibilities

• Create and support reliable predictive models and data pipelines that produce insights for player evaluation, acquisition, development, and performance improvement.
• Prepare strong written analyses and visual presentations that make complex findings understandable for both technical teams and Baseball Operations leadership.
• Work with the Baseball Systems team to incorporate new analytical insights into team tools while also spotting and resolving data quality problems.
• Track new ideas, methods, and technologies from public and academic research so the club can identify promising approaches to improve on-field performance.

Competencies

The role calls for knowledge of modern statistical and machine learning techniques, along with advanced skill in widely used data science languages and libraries. The ideal candidate should also know how to frame research questions in a way that leads to practical insights, and be able to present analysis clearly and engagingly to a wide range of stakeholders, including leaders, coaches, players, and scouts.

Additional Qualifications

A PhD or master’s degree in a quantitative discipline such as statistics, engineering, applied mathematics, physics, quantitative social sciences, computer science, computer vision, or operations research is preferred, or the equivalent in relevant professional experience. Strong SQL skills and programming ability in Python or R are required. A genuine interest in baseball and a desire to help build a championship-caliber team are also important.
