Role overview
This full-time on-site role in Kingston, Jamaica is for a customs documentation clerk with prior experience. Candidates without relevant experience will not be considered.
Core duties
- Check tariff classifications against the information in customs records.
- Keep the internal clearance register current and accurate.
- Ensure customs and local legal requirements are met before, during, and after the clearance process.
- Work with airline, shipping line, supplier, and contractor contacts to keep shipments moving smoothly and in line with standard operating procedures and customer needs.
- Prepare customs paperwork and upload it to the web server.
- Raise payment requests with finance for duties and other applicable taxes.
- Complete and file manifests for incoming and outgoing shipments.
- Track shipment progress and update company systems such as the Ops log and CargoWise according to business rules.
- Follow up with shipping companies for arrival notices.
- Submit export documentation as required.
- Coordinate with customs brokers to obtain the latest status updates on cleared shipments.
- Support the physical dispatch of shipments when needed.
- Deliver shipments to customers in line with operating procedures and customer requirements.
- Apply for customs permits when required.
- Review invoices submitted by customers.
- Assist with Delivery Orders in the Port Community System (PCS).
- Identify and report non-conformities and suggest improvements in your area.
- Handle other operational tasks related to the role.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree is the minimum academic requirement.
- At least 1 year of experience in a similar role is required.
- Working knowledge of MS Office.
- Basic understanding of AFR and OFR operations, including handling, documentation, and customs clearance.
- Ability to prepare customs declarations for imports and exports.
- Capability to verify tariff classifications with Jamaica Customs.
- Strong familiarity with customs laws, procedures, and regulations.
