Electrical Design Engineer

Role overview

Harp Electrical Engineering is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to handle the planning, development, and delivery of electrical systems across commercial, industrial, and building services work. The position covers the full project lifecycle, from early-stage concept design through installation and commissioning, while making sure all work aligns with Irish and international electrical standards, client requirements, and safety rules.

Core duties

• Develop electrical layouts, single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, panel arrangements, and cable schedules for commercial and industrial installations.
• Perform load calculations, cable sizing, fault level studies, and protection coordination analysis.
• Check that all designs meet ETCI/IEC standards, Irish building regulations, CE obligations, and health and safety requirements.
• Prepare and update bills of materials and assist with procurement of electrical parts and systems.
• Work with controls and automation teams on PLC, HMI, and SCADA-based projects.
• Contribute to the design and integration of control panels, motor control systems, and field instrumentation.
• Coordinate with project managers, site supervisors, subcontractors, and clients to support delivery on schedule and within budget.
• Take part in design reviews, technical discussions, and risk assessments throughout the project.
• Support installation, testing, FAT, SAT, commissioning, and final handover activities.
• Review technical submittals, supplier drawings, equipment datasheets, and subcontractor paperwork.
• Maintain project electrical records, including drawings, calculations, technical reports, and commissioning documentation.
• Ensure work stays aligned with client specifications, internal quality standards, and all relevant regulations.
• Handle design revisions, updates, and change-control processes.
• Assist with O&M manuals and as-built documentation preparation.

Qualifications and skills

The role requires a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field. Applicants should be comfortable using electrical design software such as SolidWorks Electrical or similar CAD tools, and should understand PLC-related automation and building services electrical systems. Experience with technical documentation and juggling multiple projects at once is important. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, clear technical communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and in cross-functional teams are also essential.

Location and work authorization

This is an onsite position in Navan, County Meath, Ireland. Candidates must be based in Ireland and willing to relocate. Work authorisation for Ireland is required.
