Role overview
Claresholm Center for Mental Health and Addictions is seeking a temporary full-time Environmental Services worker to support the cleanliness, safety, and comfort of its healthcare spaces. In this role, you will help maintain a sanitary environment for patients, families, and staff by carrying out detailed cleaning and disinfection work across clinical and non-clinical areas.
This position is hands-on and requires a strong eye for detail, a proactive approach, and the ability to work safely and professionally in a busy healthcare setting. Training will be provided for the safe cleaning and disinfection of hospital facilities.
Claresholm is a community of about 3,800 people located roughly 125 km south of Calgary. It offers affordable living, schools, sports facilities, nearby natural attractions, and access to healthcare services through Claresholm General Hospital and other community supports, including mental health and continuing care.
Key duties
- Clean and disinfect patient care and public areas in line with healthcare protocols.
- Work in spaces such as patient rooms, treatment rooms, emergency and operating rooms, washrooms, offices, and hallways.
- Remove garbage, biomedical waste, and recycling and take them to the proper holding areas.
- Handle cleanup of blood and body fluids safely and professionally.
- Wash walls, strip and replace privacy curtains using ladders or step stools, and complete routine floor care with mops, scrubbers, and buffers.
- Operate cleaning equipment for floor maintenance and restoration tasks.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, restock washroom supplies, strip linen, make beds, and replenish linens and cleaning supplies.
- Perform thorough cleaning of ceilings and windows as needed.
- Identify possible hazards and report them to the Working Leader.
- May assist with training or orientation for Environmental or Laundry staff.
Working conditions and schedule
This is a temporary full-time position with an FTE of 1.00. The work is performed onsite in a healthcare environment and is completed with minimal supervision. The pace can be fast, and the environment may occasionally be stressful. Staff are expected to remain courteous, approachable, and professional while delivering strong customer service.
Hours per shift are 7.75, with a 2-week shift pattern covering 10 shifts. The schedule follows day shifts, with Saturday and Sunday off. The temporary employee class is Temp F/T. The posting end date is 25-JUN-2026, the benefits date available is 06-JUL-2026, and the temporary end date is 07-JAN-2027. Vehicle requirement: not applicable.
Protective equipment and safety expectations
You will need to wear personal protective equipment for extended periods, including masks, gloves, gowns, and eye protection. Facial hair may affect the seal of a mask. Safe work practices and adherence to all cleaning and disinfection protocols are essential.
Qualifications
Applicants should have completed Grade 10 or an equivalent level of education. You must be able to read, write, speak, and follow written and verbal instructions in English to work safely. Basic experience with computers and smartphones is required.
The role also requires the ability to stand and walk for long periods, perform repetitive movements throughout the shift, climb ladders or step stools, squat, bend, and reach overhead and in all directions. Candidates must be physically able to lift up to 25 lbs and push or pull up to 50 lbs of force. Good hand strength is needed for repeated wiping, wringing, and gripping motions.
Dependability, cooperation, a customer-service mindset, and the ability to work with limited supervision are essential. Applications should include a completed job profile and/or resume. Internal applicants must have AHS and Department required learning current.
Preferred background
Grade 12 completion or equivalent is preferred, along with familiarity with hospital housekeeping policies and procedures, experience cleaning and disinfecting in healthcare settings, customer service experience, and leadership experience such as working lead, shift lead, trainer, or similar roles.
