Role overview
This position focuses on non-medical in-home support that helps clients stay comfortable, safe, and well supervised in their own homes. The role also includes home management support and companionship for individuals who need social interaction and light guidance to maintain a secure, clean, and orderly environment.
What you will do
- Support the client’s non-medical daily needs according to the established care plan.
- Offer companionship through conversation, listening, reading aloud, and emotional support.
- Help keep the home clean, safe, and healthy by completing light housekeeping tasks such as vacuuming, dusting, sweeping, mopping, bathroom cleaning, and laundering clothes and linens.
- Prepare and serve meals when instructed and ensure dishes are washed and the kitchen is left clean after meals.
- Assist with phone calls, letter writing, walks, community outings, beauty salon visits, and similar activities.
- Help the client take self-administered medication in line with the company’s medication policy.
- Monitor the client’s mental, physical, or emotional condition and report changes or home concerns to the supervisor promptly.
- Maintain respectful and professional communication with clients, family members, and co-workers.
- Take part in training, continuing education, staff meetings, and client conferences when requested.
- Complete service records accurately and submit documentation on time as required by policy.
- Use all equipment and supplies safely and appropriately.
- Protect client confidentiality at all times.
- Perform other reasonable related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Applicants should have at least a high school diploma and must keep valid CPR and First Aid certification. A Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check is required annually, along with background screening that meets the company’s standards, including criminal record review, driving record check where relevant, professional and personal references, and random drug and alcohol testing. Reliable transportation is essential, and assignments must be handled with punctuality and dependability. A valid driver’s licence and auto insurance are required when driving is part of the assignment.
Successful candidates must complete the company’s training and orientation program, follow policies and procedures, work with minimal supervision in a home setting, and build positive working relationships with administrative staff, clients, and families. The role also requires the ability to follow both spoken and written instructions, keep service records, and show genuine concern for helping others along with strong personal integrity.
Work environment and physical demands
The role is performed in client homes and may involve use of an automobile. There may be exposure to blood or other body fluids, creating potential risk of bloodborne pathogens and infectious diseases.
The work involves frequent physical activity such as driving, assisting clients, and carrying out housekeeping tasks. Regular requirements include standing, sitting, walking, bending, speaking, and hearing. The role also involves reaching and lifting up to 12 kg (25 lbs), along with good manual dexterity and strength in both hands.
Compensation
Pay starts at CAD 19.00 per hour.
