Role overview

This remote contracting opportunity is for an experienced software engineer who can support the training and assessment of next-generation AI systems by working through practical engineering assignments. The work is centered on real-world problems spanning backend, full-stack, systems, and infrastructure domains.

The position suits someone who can step into unfamiliar codebases, evaluate technical choices, and communicate engineering reasoning with clarity. Prior AI experience is not needed; the emphasis is on strong judgment, solid coding fundamentals, and the ability to assess architecture, tradeoffs, and implementation quality.

Work details

This is a contractor role with an expected commitment of 10 to 12 hours per week. The work can be performed remotely.

Key responsibilities

• Tackle complex engineering tasks across backend, full-stack, infrastructure, and systems-oriented work.
• Inspect, troubleshoot, refine, and explain code in varied technical settings.
• Evaluate or design practical approaches involving APIs, databases, services, integrations, testing, and release workflows.
• Weigh tradeoffs related to scalability, maintainability, speed, reliability, security, and developer experience.
• Document technical reasoning clearly in writing, including why a solution is effective and what alternatives were considered.
• Work with the customer’s team on technical reviews, implementation choices, and problem-solving exercises.
• Adjust quickly to new codebases, frameworks, and changing technical needs.

Required background

Candidates should bring at least 5 years of hands-on software engineering experience and be comfortable in one or more backend or full-stack environments such as Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, Java, C#, .NET, C++, Go, Ruby, PHP, or similar stacks.

Experience should include building, maintaining, or evaluating production-grade applications, APIs, services, databases, or integrations. A strong grasp of debugging, testing, code quality, architecture, and engineering tradeoffs is important, along with the ability to explain difficult technical decisions objectively and clearly.

The role also requires comfort with reading and reasoning through unfamiliar code and technical requirements.

Preferred experience

Helpful experience includes work with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, as well as CI/CD, DevOps practices, containers, monitoring, or production operations. Exposure to frontend frameworks like React, Next.js, Angular, Vue, or React Native is also valued. Additional positives include open-source contributions, public GitHub work, technical writing, a strong portfolio, mentoring, code review experience, or participation in architecture decisions.

Additional information

This role does not require prior AI experience. Success in the position depends primarily on engineering judgment, clear technical communication, and the ability to evaluate code and system design thoughtfully.
