Role overview
This position is responsible for the day-to-day care, organization, and reliable operation of the laundry area. The role partners with Housekeeping and Patient Care Assistants to make sure floors receive the right linen and other stock on time and in the proper quantities.
Core duties
- Prepare wash formulas for heavily stained or soiled items, including patients’ personal clothing and all linen.
- Separate used patient garments and linens according to product category.
- Confirm that washed clothing and linens meet quality standards before they are added back into inventory.
- Report equipment problems and upkeep needs to the appropriate contact.
- Recommend practical ways to improve laundry productivity and workflow.
- Sort, organize, and return patients’ clothes and linens by type, either on carts, in bags, back to patient rooms, or neatly stored on linen racks.
- Fold clothing, linen, and terry items carefully and keep them in clean, presentable condition.
- Work efficiently in a busy setting with production deadlines and time-sensitive targets.
- Maintain proper linen availability so housekeeping storage areas do not run short.
- Manage multiple machines and different laundry loads at the same time.
- Demonstrate a positive, approachable attitude when dealing with clients and staff.
- Be available for a flexible schedule that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Additional skills and working style
The role calls for strong people skills, sound judgement in difficult situations, the ability to work both independently and in a team, and the capacity to prioritize tasks effectively. Comfort around patients with medical or behavioural concerns and the ability to take instructions from several people during a shift are also important.
Education and experience
A secondary school diploma is preferred. Previous experience in laundry or dry cleaning is an asset, especially in a clinical or facility-based environment.
Physical requirements
This job requires good mobility and stamina. Candidates should be able to stand for long periods and lift or carry up to 40 pounds. The work may also involve stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
