About the Company

Deep Sky is building technology to tackle climate change through large-scale carbon removal. At Deep Sky Alpha, described as the first innovation and commercialization hub for carbon removal, the team develops and runs advanced Direct Air Capture systems that pull carbon dioxide from the air. The facility is located in Innisfail, Alberta and operates multiple DAC technologies from international innovators in a live industrial setting.

Role Summary

The company is hiring a practical, hands-on Plant Operator to help bring the Direct Air Capture plant in Innisfail online and keep operations running smoothly. In this role, you will report to the Head of Operations and be accountable for safe operation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of plant equipment and capture/regeneration processes, while also contributing to continuous improvement. This position is full time and follows a 7 days on / 7 days off rotating schedule with both day and night shifts in an industrial environment where PPE is required.

Core Duties

  • Run DAC process units, sorbent and regeneration systems, blowers, heat exchangers, compressors, pumps, and other balance-of-plant equipment.
  • Assist with commissioning and startup work, including pre-start checks, functional tests, system flushing, and coordination with engineering teams.
  • Track process conditions such as flow, temperature, pressure, and gas composition, then take control actions to keep operations stable.
  • Identify and resolve mechanical, electrical, and process-related problems, carrying out corrective work or involving maintenance as needed.
  • Complete daily safety and operations checklists, plant rounds, and logs, and quickly report any abnormal conditions.
  • Carry out routine mechanical upkeep, equipment tuning, and small repairs when required.
  • Review equipment performance, monitor KPIs, and flag deterioration or improvement opportunities.
  • Follow SOPs, lockout/tagout practices, permit-to-work rules, and all other site safety procedures.
  • Take part in startup and post-startup testing, data gathering, and root-cause analysis.
  • Support ongoing improvement efforts and operator development, including mentoring junior team members.
  • Handle additional tasks as needed to support plant and project goals.

Qualifications

  • Valid 4th Class Power Engineering certification is mandatory.
  • Between 5 and 10 years of experience in commissioning, startup, and operation of industrial process plants, ideally involving gas handling, thermal regeneration, chemical processing, or air separation systems.
  • Strong problem-solving ability with proven mechanical aptitude.
  • Practical experience with pumps, compressors, blowers, heat exchangers, valves, instrumentation, and basic electrical controls.
  • Ability to evaluate equipment performance and interpret process data.
  • Comfortable working outdoors, at heights, and performing physically demanding tasks.
  • Good communication skills, a team-oriented mindset, and an interest in learning and using new technology.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, be on call, and adapt working hours during commissioning periods.

Preferred Experience

  • Background in carbon capture, adsorption/desorption systems, or CO2 handling is an advantage.
  • Exposure to DCS or PLC systems, PID control, and basic process simulation or data analysis tools is preferred.
  • Additional trade qualifications such as millwright, mechanic, or electrician certification, or further power engineering coursework, are valued.

Why Join

This role offers the chance to join a purpose-driven team working on climate solutions in a fast-moving, innovative environment. The organization offers competitive pay and benefits, along with opportunities for growth and professional development.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit a resume along with a summary of their relevant background and interest in the position.
