Role overview
Tesla is seeking a Process Engineer for the Cybertruck General Assembly team in Austin, TX. In this role, you will shape, document, launch, and refine production methods within assembly operations. The position focuses on improving flow through the factory while taking ownership of Safety, Rate, Quality, and Cost metrics. You will work on process balancing, tooling selection and design, ergonomic improvements, material presentation, and other factors that affect manufacturability and output.
You will collaborate closely with Production, Design, Test, and Quality Engineering teams to solve manufacturing issues, strengthen buildability, and drive ongoing improvements. You will also work with shop leadership to improve, capture, and communicate key business metrics at the factory level. The role supports continuous production activity across a 24/7 operating environment.
Key responsibilities
- Build deep knowledge of manufacturing processes by analyzing data and the product itself, then update work instructions and material movement methods to improve consistency, ergonomics, and waste reduction using Lean Manufacturing practices.
- Own production process design so the operation can deliver high-quality output on time, while improving Overall Equipment Effectiveness and keeping costs under control.
- Lead continuous improvement efforts aimed at increasing yield, capacity, and process capability.
- Investigate issues that arise during manufacturing and apply structured problem-solving methods to uncover and fix the true root causes.
- Use frameworks such as DMAIC, 8D, 5 Whys, and Ishikawa diagrams to support corrective action and resolution.
- Study data from multiple sources to spot trends in quality, performance, and related business measures.
- Create clear tools for collecting, visualizing, and analyzing data, and use predictive insights to support operational and financial decisions.
- Work with factory data systems and analytical tools such as SQL, Python, R, JMP, Minitab, Tableau, and Ignition.
- Control process variation with methods such as Statistical Process Control and Measurement Systems Analysis.
- Audit manufacturing processes to confirm that product standards and specifications are being met.
- Help build and maintain FMEAs and Control Plans.
- Prepare and maintain Manufacturing Instructions, routings, change control documentation, and related processes.
- Train sustaining technicians and support training for production personnel when needed.
- Coordinate process-sustaining technician activities to keep daily line coverage running, including documentation of rework procedures.
- Create business processes that capture and manage important metrics, then refine them so they can later be transferred to less technical teams without losing results.
- Support production operations running on a 24-by-7 schedule.
Requirements
- Degree in Engineering or comparable hands-on experience.
- Background in improving manufacturing processes, with a proven record of raising Overall Equipment Effectiveness.
- Working knowledge of Bill of Materials, Manufacturing Execution Systems, Specification Management, and Change Point Management.
- Experience gathering and analyzing data to create data-based actions and control methods.
- Strong structured problem-solving ability and a history of delivering lasting improvements.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills within a manufacturing and engineering setting.
- Ability to think creatively about faster, better, and more cost-effective ways of working.
- Strong interest in building new products and using testing to help achieve high quality, reliability, and engineering excellence.
