About the role

Holmes Solutions is looking for a practical, motivated technician to join its Christchurch-based team. The role sits in a varied engineering environment where you will help turn concepts into working prototypes, support testing activities, and contribute to solving technical challenges across structural, mechanical, and electro-mechanical projects.

This is a permanent full-time position located in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. Some travel may be needed from time to time to support project work, both within New Zealand and overseas.

What you will do

  • Plan and carry out testing across multiple stages, including concept trials, performance checks, durability work, and fault or failure analysis.
  • Set up and use instruments, sensors, and data acquisition tools to ensure dependable test configurations and accurate results.
  • Gather, organise, analyse, and present test information, while keeping thorough records, reports, and process notes.
  • Build, assemble, and commission prototypes, rigs, jigs, and fixtures using engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Diagnose issues during prototype fabrication and testing, then work with colleagues to resolve them.
  • Coordinate timelines, test bookings, equipment access, and material ordering across several active projects.
  • Support client demonstrations, witnessed testing, and technical conversations during design and project reviews.
  • Coach teammates, encourage quality and continuous improvement, and help strengthen the test and manufacturing capability of the business.

What you need to bring

Success in this role will suit someone who is comfortable working independently, managing their own priorities, contributing ideas, and adapting quickly when plans or requirements change.

  • Strong hands-on problem-solving ability and confidence troubleshooting in a workshop or test setting.
  • Practical engineering workshop experience, ideally in product development, prototyping, manufacturing, or testing.
  • Capability across fabrication and manufacturing methods such as manual machining, welding, CNC machining, 3D printing, and precision assembly.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications, while also helping shape workable solutions where the route forward is still developing.
  • Experience with measurement systems, instrumentation, data acquisition, and test equipment operation.
  • Good skills in handling data and preparing reports, including use of spreadsheets and clear result presentation.
  • Sound understanding of materials, manufacturing methods, and quality control practices.
  • Strong communication skills for working with engineers, technicians, clients, and suppliers.
  • Commitment to safe working practices and awareness of workshop and laboratory hazards.
  • Ability to mentor others, support training, and help establish consistent ways of working.
  • A Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical), a mechanical trade qualification, or equivalent practical experience is advantageous.
