Role overview

Manitoba Justice is hiring for a part-time, term Sheriff’s Officer 2 role within Sheriff Services, Courts Division in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This position supports courtroom security and enforcement activities across court settings and may involve work in vehicles, aircraft, courtrooms, and various Manitoba Justice offices. The public-facing nature of the role means the officer represents Manitoba Justice in uniform.

Compensation and training

The pay rate for this position is $28.81 to $35.91 per hour. Selected candidates will complete a mandatory paid training program lasting about 3 to 4 weeks, delivered on full days from Monday to Friday. During training, participants are eligible for a stipend of $70.00 per day, and attendance is required to receive it. Training will be held in Selkirk with some components in Winnipeg, and recruits must arrange their own travel to the Selkirk training site.

Key duties

The role involves escorting, guarding, transporting, and maintaining control of people in custody. It also includes preserving order, security, and decorum in courtrooms, enforcing writs and court orders, supporting seizures and evictions, serving court documents, and apprehending individuals on bench warrants.

Selection and screening requirements

To be considered, applicants must send an Application Screening Form together with a resume to the Public Service Commission by email and include the advertisement number and position title in the subject line. Only candidates who pass the screening stage will move forward to interview. If selected after screening, applicants will be asked to begin the required Child Abuse Registry Check, Adult Abuse Registry Check, and Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, and receipts must be provided before the interview. At interview, a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract, a copy of the Criminal Record Check, the Adult Abuse Registry Check, and the Child Abuse Registry Check are mandatory, or proof that they have been requested must be presented.

Qualifications and experience

Strong interpersonal skills, a respectful approach, teamwork, clear verbal and written communication, good judgment, sound decision-making, and the ability to handle stress and unexpected situations are important for this position. Candidates should be well organized, able to work with people from different cultures and backgrounds, and capable of working with limited supervision.

Conditions of employment

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada. Additional employment conditions include successful enhanced security screening at Level IV, a satisfactory medical fitness report before training begins, a Full Class 4 Driver’s Licence (4F), a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract, First Aid certification, CPR Level C certification, and the ability to travel within Manitoba, including by small plane. The job also requires extended and flexible hours, including short-notice call-ins.

These positions are limited to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Following successful completion of training, candidates will be hired as part-time term Sheriff’s Officers, and regular full-time positions are later filled from the part-time workforce.
