Role overview

The Assistant Managing Director is a key leadership partner to the Managing Director, helping connect long-term strategy with day-to-day execution and relationship management. This position sits at the crossroads of executive support, cross-functional coordination, and external outreach, and is designed to strengthen organizational sustainability and growth.

In this role, you will act as a reliable advisor who helps shape decisions, gather and interpret information from across the organization, anticipate leadership needs, and make sure time and attention are focused on the theatre’s most important priorities.

The position calls for sound judgment, confidentiality, adaptability, and the ability to move comfortably between big-picture planning and hands-on delivery. Success in the role also depends on initiative, strong reasoning skills, and the ability to build positive relationships with internal teams and outside stakeholders while reflecting Everyman Theatre’s values of people, community, and excellence.

This is also a growth-oriented leadership track role, offering increasing scope, independence, and strategic influence over time based on performance and organizational needs.

Strategic partnership and leadership support

  • Work closely with the Managing Director as a trusted advisor by offering insights, analysis, and practical recommendations on priorities, risks, and opportunities.
  • Bring together information from multiple departments and participants to support informed decisions and keep strategy aligned.
  • Help turn organizational strategy into clear action plans that reflect the theatre’s goals and values.
  • Keep the Managing Director and Artistic Director’s schedules focused on the organization’s highest-value work.

Initiative ownership and cross-department coordination

  • Take the lead on cross-functional projects from planning through delivery, with attention to alignment, accountability, and results.
  • Support major initiatives such as resiliency planning, CARES work, capital projects, campaign planning and execution, systems integration, and efforts that strengthen organizational stability and growth.
  • Bring stakeholders together, balance competing demands, and make sure commitments are followed through across teams.
  • Spot links between challenges, emerging needs, and strategic goals, then move practical solutions forward proactively.

External relationships and strategic engagement

  • Develop and manage relationships with board members, donors, patrons, community partners, business leaders, public officials, and civic leaders.
  • Represent the theatre at networking gatherings, performances, cultural events, and community activities.
  • Use conversations and relationships outside the organization to open doors for partnerships, funding, and institutional priorities.
  • Help with advocacy efforts by staying engaged with local, regional, and state government stakeholders in support of the theatre, Downtown, and the arts.

Board relations and governance

  • Act as the main point of contact for the Board of Directors and ensure communication stays organized and effective.
  • Plan and coordinate board and committee meetings, including logistics, materials, note-taking, and action-item follow-up.
  • Keep official board documentation current, including minutes, bylaws, resolutions, and member records.
  • Assist with board growth efforts by researching prospective candidates and identifying gaps in representation.

Patron advancement and institutional growth

  • Partner with leadership, marketing, philanthropy, and education teams to support patron advancement efforts such as planning, tracking, research, cultivation, and stewardship.
  • Help shape cross-department strategies that strengthen loyalty, deepen connections, and encourage a culture of giving.

Executive operations and communication

  • Manage the calendars of the Managing Director and Artistic Director with careful prioritization and strategic intent.
  • Prepare executive briefings for meetings and events, including background research, stakeholder context, and talking points.
  • Draft and refine internal and external communications that support leadership objectives.
  • Set up cross-department meetings and help keep communication flowing clearly across the organization.
  • Capture notes and action items, share them with the right teams, and follow up to maintain accountability.
  • Support financial forecasting preparation and analysis to help align the organization with its multi-year financial plan.

Organizational integration and culture

  • Build a strong working understanding of all departments so internal communication and collaboration are effective.
  • Help reinforce organization-wide engagement with strategic priorities and initiatives.
  • Model a workplace culture rooted in collaboration, accountability, and excellence.

Key qualities and competencies

  • Genuine enthusiasm for the arts and a belief that live performance and arts education help communities thrive.
  • Ability to think strategically and connect ideas, opportunities, and organizational priorities.
  • Comfort taking ownership of projects and leading work independently.
  • Strong relationship-building skills across a wide range of stakeholders.
  • High discretion, sound judgment, and emotional maturity.
  • Excellent organization and attention to detail, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proactive, flexible, and solution-focused approach.
