Role overview
This position is for a Biomedical Scientist within Cellular Pathology (Histopathology) at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. The post is graded at Band 5 and is offered on a full-time basis in a busy diagnostic laboratory environment.
Working pattern
The role follows a full-time schedule of 7.5 hours per day, working between 08:00 and 18:00. The current working week runs from Monday to Friday. The post also requires flexibility to work across any of Leicester’s three hospital sites.
About the laboratory
The cellular pathology laboratory processes around 65,000 surgical cases each year. It is UKAS accredited and registered with the IBMS as a pre- and post-registration training laboratory. Continuous professional development is actively supported and encouraged.
Main duties
The successful applicant is expected to contribute across the core diagnostic areas of the laboratory, including specimen reception, dissection, embedding, microtomy, section production, and quality control. Experience with specialist histological methods such as automated immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and enzyme histochemistry would be an advantage, although it is not mandatory.
Candidate profile
The trust is looking for a highly motivated and proactive team player who can work accurately and efficiently under pressure. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with a solid understanding of Biomedical Science in the NHS and a flexible attitude aligned with service reconfiguration and improvements in patient care.
Trust values and direction
The trust’s 2023-2030 strategy focuses on high-quality care for all, being a great place to work, partnerships for impact, and research and education excellence. Health equality is central to this approach, with active efforts to reduce avoidable healthcare differences through collaboration with communities. The values guiding day-to-day work are compassion, pride, inclusion, and teamwork.
Application guidance
The vacancy may close as soon as enough suitable applications are received, and this can happen quickly. Early submission is strongly recommended.
