Building Services Worker

Position Overview

Kern County is seeking a Building Services Worker to support operations across different county departments in Bakersfield, California. The role is part of a public service environment where employees help keep facilities running smoothly and contribute to the county’s mission of serving the community.

Examination Process

Selection is based on a written exam worth 100% of the score. The test is planned for July 22, 2026. It will assess arithmetic basics such as ratios and proportions, familiarity with basic hand tools and electric floor-cleaning equipment used in janitorial work, the ability to follow written and spoken directions, safe body mechanics, basic safety practices, and the ability to read labels on containers and supplies.

If there are not enough candidates to justify a written test, the Human Resources Division may instead evaluate application materials only. In that case, the appraisal of materials will carry 100% weight. Applicants must score at least 70% in each stage of the selection process.

Minimum Qualifications

A valid California Class C driver’s license is required for some assignments. Candidates should have a mix of training and work experience that gives them the knowledge and abilities needed for the job, including simple arithmetic, use of basic hand tools and janitorial electric equipment, careful handling of instructions, safe work habits, and the ability to read supply labels. They must also be able to communicate clearly with staff, coworkers, and supervisors about finished and unfinished tasks.

Additional Information

Admission to the examination requires a valid government-issued photo ID. Anyone who cannot present proper identification must contact the Human Resources Division before the test date to make arrangements. A background investigation may be performed for this classification.

After a conditional offer is made, post-offer medical screening and drug testing may be required at county expense.

The examination will create an eligibility list used for immediate appointments, and additional permanent or temporary hiring may occur as needed. Successful applicants will remain on the eligible list for twelve months unless the Civil Service Commission specifies otherwise.
