Role Summary
This entry-level cleaner role supports sanitation across the refinery and packaging zones, while also returning scrap product to the raw materials shed. The starting pay for this position is $25.32 per hour. After the probationary period is completed, and once suitable openings are available, cleaners may be able to move into other manufacturing roles that start at $35.76 per hour.
Key Duties
- Maintain a clean and orderly condition in the packaging and processing areas, including floors and equipment.
- Remove dust from production spaces.
- Clean both food-contact and non-food-contact equipment, along with structural surfaces such as ceilings, walls, drains, and floors, by following the required cleaning methods.
- Lift, cut, and empty scrap sugar bags weighing up to 20 kg, or up to 40 kg when working with a teammate.
- Move large buggies filled with reject sugar.
- Use powered hand trucks to transport full sugar loads.
- Mop large floor areas and operate a floor washer for deep cleaning.
- Carry out all work in line with GMP, food safety, and health and safety procedures.
- Handle assigned tasks across multiple plant locations, with special duties added as business needs change.
- Alert the Sanitation Supervisor to any unsanitary conditions or practices observed in the plant.
- Follow all sanitation instructions and procedures consistently.
- Keep accurate records and logs for the sanitation department.
- Complete cleaning tasks on the supervisor’s schedule and assist with training or supporting other associates when asked.
- Perform any other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Experience working in a manufacturing or industrial setting for one year is considered an asset, and one year in such an environment is preferred.
Skills and Competencies
- Ability to understand and follow straightforward instructions.
- Comfort with repetitive but varied work tasks.
- Capability to use packaging equipment, powered hand trucks, and related tools.
- Knowledge of correct cleaning methods and procedures.
- Understanding of dry and wet cleaning processes and how cleaning chemicals work.
- Familiarity with WHMIS, GMP, and workplace safety practices.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Attention to detail and the ability to multitask in a fast-moving environment.
- Ability to maintain safe and careful work habits.
Physical Requirements
The role involves sustained physical activity and may require lifting or moving up to 20 kg. Candidates must be able to stand for long periods and bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb stairs. The job also requires the ability to see, handle product, operate machinery, and use hand tools.
Work Environment
Employees are regularly exposed to allergens including peanuts, tree nuts, sulfites, soy, dairy, egg, gluten, and sesame. The role may involve wet or humid conditions, including slippery floors, and occasional exposure to very hot equipment or processing areas as well as noise above 85 decibels. Hearing protection is mandatory for all employees. Some tasks may also require handling chemicals and using PPE, including respiratory protection.
Pay and Conditions
The wage for this role is $25.32 per hour. Shift premiums and overtime apply. This is a vacant position.
