About the Company
Dyson is a worldwide technology business focused on solving problems that others often overlook. Its approach is rooted in inventive engineering, extensive testing, and a willingness to question standard solutions in order to build products that are genuinely different, more effective, and more useful.
The business is working on a confidential new product area and is seeking a Design Engineer to help define and shape what follows. The position offers the chance to work on new problem spaces, examine assumptions critically, and convert ambitious ideas into engineered products that can be manufactured, tested, and trusted.
Role Overview
As a Design Engineer within the Singapore Design Engineering Team at the Singapore Technology Centre, you will support the development of a new product category from the earliest concept stage through to production readiness.
You will be part of a cross-functional engineering group, using practical design capability, structured problem-solving, and hands-on engineering judgement to develop parts, assemblies, and complete product systems that satisfy Dyson’s expectations for performance, reliability, safety, quality, cost, and user experience.
The role involves converting technical challenges into clear design inputs, developing and assessing concepts, building prototypes, learning from test outcomes, and using data to strengthen product robustness. It calls for a hands-on, inquisitive, and organized mindset, along with the ability to work independently on clearly defined tasks while partnering closely with senior engineers, technical leads, external development partners, manufacturing, quality, operations, procurement, testing, and global engineering teams.
This position is a strong fit for an engineer who is continuing to deepen their product development expertise, but who is ready to take responsibility for defined parts, assemblies, and design activities, provide evidence-based recommendations, and contribute to the delivery of durable solutions for a new Dyson category.
Responsibilities
- Design product parts, assemblies, and technical solutions that satisfy agreed targets for function, performance, reliability, safety, quality, cost, and timing.
- Break down the problem into clear design inputs and set measurable requirements covering technical, regulatory, manufacturing, and cost limits.
- Create concept options and assess them systematically against requirements to determine the best solution, associated compromises, and risks.
- Use design-for-manufacture and design-for-assembly methods to produce practical, resilient, and production-ready designs.
- Prepare, review, or coordinate 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, tolerance analyses, and engineering records needed for design development, review, and release.
- Build and support prototypes, test rigs, and samples used for investigation, verification, review, and demonstration.
- Define and help execute testing that reflects real user behaviour, expected use cases, and likely failure modes.
- Study test outcomes, design problems, and failures to determine root causes and propose effective corrective actions.
- Track progress against plans, manage priorities effectively, and raise risks or blockers proactively when necessary.
- Contribute to design reviews, technical reviews, and project discussions by presenting design logic, supporting evidence, and recommendations clearly.
- Work closely with senior engineers, technical leads, system owners, external development partners, quality, manufacturing, operations, procurement, suppliers, and global engineering teams.
- Record learnings, design reasoning, and technical evidence to support future decisions and ongoing improvement.
Requirements
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Product Development, Mechatronics, Science, or a similar technical field.
- Normally 2 or more years of experience in mechanical design, product development, or a comparable engineering role.
- Hands-on experience designing components in plastic, rubber, metal, or mechanical assemblies, with a solid understanding of DFM and DFA principles.
- Working knowledge of 3D CAD, 2D engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerance stack-up, and design documentation, with the ability to review and guide CAD and drawing outputs.
- Ability to follow established design processes and engineering best practices to produce robust solutions, with guidance when required.
- Capability to interpret technical requirements, identify constraints, and convert them into practical design work.
- Methodical problem-solving approach that uses prototypes, testing, data, and analysis to support evidence-based decisions.
- Comfort operating in a fast-moving and ambiguous product development environment, with the ability to plan, prioritize, and adapt.
- Ability to contribute effectively both as an independent contributor and as part of a cross-functional team.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical ideas, design reasoning, risks, and recommendations to colleagues and stakeholders.
- Curious, creative, and proactive mindset with a strong drive to learn, improve, and solve engineering problems.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, supplier development, industrial measurement methods, product testing, or technical areas such as thermals, acoustics, fluid flow, electronics, mechanisms, or human factors would be an advantage.
- Genuine enthusiasm for engineering and a drive to help create products that are meaningfully better.
