Role overview
An established UK civil engineering contractor is growing its pre-construction function and is hiring several Estimators at different experience levels. The role supports a healthy pipeline of infrastructure and earthworks work.
About the position
This is an important pre-construction role focused on preparing reliable cost plans and competitive bids that help secure project wins. You will work through the full estimating process, starting with early enquiries and scope checks and continuing through to final submission, while coordinating with technical specialists, suppliers, and the wider supply chain to shape commercially strong results.
Key responsibilities
- Develop detailed costings covering materials, labour, plant, and subcontracted work.
- Review drawings, specifications, and work information to clearly establish the project scope.
- Drive the tender process and ensure estimates are internally reviewed and submitted within deadline.
- Maintain productive relationships with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive pricing.
- Prepare concise handover packs and supporting documents for delivery teams, while helping improve estimating practices and standards.
Experience and background
- Experience in civil engineering, infrastructure, or earthworks estimating, with a proven ability to build first-principles cost models.
- Strong numerical and analytical ability, with close attention to detail and solid commercial judgement.
- Confidence using standard estimating software and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management capability.
- Experience evaluating tender documentation and managing bid inputs from start to finish.
Qualifications and desirable experience
- Usually at least 3 years of estimating experience within civil engineering, earthworks, or a closely related field.
- Exposure to large or technically complex projects, along with knowledge of UK specifications and cost drivers, would be an advantage.
- A professional or academic background in civil engineering, quantity surveying, construction management, or an equivalent discipline is preferred.
