Role overview
As an Instructional Designer, you will contribute to the creation, enhancement, and upkeep of a large learning ecosystem containing more than 1,200 learning modules. The work involves applying adult learning theory, user experience thinking, and data-driven judgment to build engaging, scalable digital learning experiences. The role includes development of both standard and custom eLearning courses, along with supporting assets, using available tools and technologies to keep learning content consistent, high-quality, and learner-focused.
What you will do
- Work with instructors, project leads, and other stakeholders during course planning to clarify learning goals, audience needs, instructional approach, course elements, assessment methods, and overall project boundaries before development starts.
- Coordinate with subject matter experts to build strong eLearning content that meets instructional design standards, expected learning outcomes, and brand and quality requirements.
- Collaborate with customers, instructors, project leads, and internal teams to define course direction, learning outcomes, scope, deliverables, and timelines so the final product aligns with learner needs and project goals.
- Create new library courses and custom courses, supporting all phases of the design and development process through both independent work and team-based collaboration while using technology and curated content to maintain quality and accuracy.
- Update existing courses when needed by improving user experience, applying instructional design best practices, addressing customer questions or content issues, and revising graphics, learning treatments, and subject matter for accuracy and relevance.
- Support eLearning Developers, subject matter experts, and instructors by sharing instructional best practices, content design guidance, and evaluation approaches; also create and communicate templates and refresh department policies and guidelines as needed.
- Translate learning outcomes into competency frameworks for specific products to support clear learning paths and measurable skill growth.
- Review learning products for accessibility using WCAG and Section 508 standards, maintain VPAT documentation, and suggest accessibility improvements where practical.
Qualifications and experience
- A bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Training and Development, Education with an adult learning focus, or a related field is required.
- At least 5 years of experience in learning and development course design is needed.
- Hands-on experience with eLearning authoring tools such as Articulate, Adobe Captivate, or similar platforms is expected; Articulate is preferred.
- You should be able to apply adult learning principles effectively to improve learning outcomes and the overall user experience.
- Proven experience working with and influencing subject matter experts, instructors, and other cross-functional partners is important.
- Familiarity with learning experience design and UX principles as they relate to digital learning products is required.
- Working knowledge of WCAG and Section 508 accessibility standards, along with experience supporting VPAT documentation, is needed.
- Comfort using MS Office, JIRA, Smartsheet, Adobe tools, and/or project management software to support product development is expected.
- Strong understanding of learning delivery systems such as LMS, LCRS, microlearning, and virtual instructor-led training tools is required.
- Graphic design experience is a plus.
- Experience aligning learning outcomes with competency or skill frameworks is required.
- Strong organization, the ability to manage several projects at once, and comfort working in a fast-moving environment are important.
- The role requires effective collaboration in a matrix structure and across a diverse, geographically distributed team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- You should be able to learn new tools and methods quickly as technologies evolve.
- Technical fluency, creative problem-solving, and careful proofreading and editing skills are needed.
