Quantity Surveyor

Role overview

The Quantity Surveyor will provide commercial and contractual support to the project team, helping to ensure that project delivery stays aligned with agreed terms, budgets, and controls. The position is based in Mullingar, Ireland and reports to the Senior Quantity Surveyor. The working pattern is 45 hours per week.

Key duties

• Support the creation of cost estimates and project budgets.
• Assist with cost monitoring and the preparation of monthly CVRs.
• Visit sites to check progress and compare it with programme and cost expectations.
• Oversee subcontractor payment processes.
• Contribute to tender pricing and the preparation of contract paperwork.
• Review commercial exposures, help reduce risk, and apply company risk-management procedures.
• Assist with the approval and submission of project variations.
• Authorise contracts, subcontract agreements, and orders for materials and plant.
• Help protect cash flow by measuring, valuing, and controlling work, and by supporting customer invoicing and supplier payments.
• Promote the organisation’s health and safety policies and wider risk controls.
• Represent the company’s values in dealing with customers and aim to meet or exceed expectations.

Experience and skills required

The ideal candidate will bring hands-on quantity surveying experience in trenching and ducting, substations, and overhead line projects. Strong commercial awareness, subcontract procurement knowledge, and confidence with monthly reporting and earned value analysis are essential. The role also calls for a solid understanding of contract conditions and construction law, including FIDIC and NEC3 terms. You should be able to question resource use and costings, negotiate project costs, work well both independently and as part of a team, and communicate clearly with customers in person, in writing, and over the phone. Advanced Microsoft Excel and broader IT proficiency are important, as is the ability to manage priorities and meet tight deadlines.

Qualifications

• A degree in Quantity Surveying, or an equivalent qualification.
• Safe Pass certification.
• A full, valid, clean driving licence.
• Manual handling training.

Preferred background

• Chartered status or membership of a relevant professional body such as RICS, ICE, or CIOB would be an advantage.
• Experience in general construction, mechanical and electrical, or telecommunications installation work would also be beneficial.

Additional information

This position involves travel to project sites throughout Ireland, and occasional overnight stays may be needed depending on business requirements.
