About Watercare
Watercare is entering a major investment phase, with plans to spend $14 billion across the next 10 years to keep pace with Auckland’s growth while building resilience for a changing climate. That works out to roughly $3.8 million invested each day.
Watercare is New Zealand’s largest water utility and is guided by the principle that healthy water supports healthy land and healthy communities.
About the Role
This is a specialist opportunity for a meticulous Quantity Surveyor to contribute within Watercare’s Internal Audit function. The role is focused on cost assurance across the supplier network, using quantity surveying expertise to review, challenge, and validate supplier charges.
You will help strengthen transparency and accountability in invoicing by assessing the quality and reliability of the financial information used to justify charges. The position requires regular engagement with suppliers and time split between Watercare’s Newmarket office and supplier premises across the Auckland region, with onsite attendance expected for up to four days each week depending on current assignments.
Key Responsibilities
- Apply quantity surveying expertise to support Watercare’s strategic and day-to-day operational needs.
- Review contractor and supplier costs billed to Watercare to confirm they are accurate, reasonable, and properly supported.
- Assess whether the financial data and evidence used by suppliers are sufficient to justify invoicing, and whether the completed work meets the expected quality standard.
About You
Success in this role calls for strong people leadership capability and the confidence to work effectively in large, complex public-sector or corporate settings.
Qualifications and Experience
- You hold full membership with the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NZIQS), or an equivalent international professional designation such as FRICS, MRICS, or ARICS.
- You bring at least 7 years of Quantity Surveying experience, ideally gained in water and wastewater, infrastructure, utilities, or major construction environments.
- You have strong technical knowledge of quantity surveying methods, workflows, and procedures, backed by a Diploma or Degree in Quantity Surveying or Construction Economics.
- You understand business operations well, including relevant legislation and the commercial factors that influence decision-making.
- You are able to work independently, balance multiple priorities, and deliver strong results with limited supervision.
What’s on Offer
Watercare offers a competitive salary along with a staff benefits package that includes training and development support, life and income protection insurance, generous parental leave, and employee discounts with a range of major retailers.
