Role overviewThis position is accountable for the complete operation of a scrap yard, from setting up the facility through commissioning and day-to-day running. The role focuses on ensuring that the yard operates efficiently, remains profitable, and stays aligned with legal, safety, municipal, and environmental requirements. It also involves managing the collection, cleaning, sorting, processing, and sale of scrap and process waste, while maintaining strong community and stakeholder relationships.Key responsibilitiesOversee the full lifecycle of scrap yard operations, including planning, investment proposal development, setup, commissioning, and ongoing management.Maintain compliance with all applicable safety, regulatory, municipal, and environmental standards.Keep the yard secure, orderly, and well-maintained at all times.Train team members on safe working methods, equipment handling, and operational expectations.Implement safety procedures, monitor adherence, and carry out regular audits to reduce injury, environmental, and compliance risks.Lead inspections and support risk-mitigation efforts to ensure continued compliance.Obtain the required permits, licenses, and approvals needed to establish and operate the yard legally.Manage commissioning activities, including layout planning, installation of cleaning, sorting, processing, security, and waste-handling systems.Prepare and maintain records, reports, and documentation required for audits, inspections, and stakeholder reviews.Act as the main point of contact for regulators, respond to queries or site visits, and execute corrective actions when required.Apply sustainability practices, including responsible disposal of unrecoverable waste and pollution-control measures.Supervise collection, sorting, baling, and other value-addition processes.Monitor material quality and grading for both inbound and outbound scrap.Develop strong business relationships with scrap suppliers, waste generators, municipal authorities, and buyers to build a reliable supply and sales network.Design efficient material-handling workflows so incoming scrap is processed quickly and waste is handled appropriately.Resolve quality-related complaints from vendors or customers and prevent repeat issues through corrective action.Coordinate lot-wise hedging and sale of by-products in a timely manner.Maintain accurate inventory, transaction, and documentation records, including those needed for accounting and tax compliance.Handle the full PO-to-payment cycle for vendors.Prepare a detailed investment proposal for setting up the scrap yard, covering costs, operational needs, compliance requirements, and expected financial returns.Track inventory levels of incoming and processed material to ensure smooth turnover and efficient use of yard capacity.Own the profit and loss performance for the yard and sourcing area.Create and execute plans to improve operational efficiency and profitability.Reduce transportation expenses and ensure timely movement and delivery of materials.Control costs across procurement, labor, utilities, equipment upkeep, regulatory charges, and waste disposal.Review yard financial results and share KPI-based insights and improvement recommendations.Lead teams responsible for loading, unloading, sorting, and baling activities.Plan staffing and shifts to match operational requirements.Organize logistics for scrap movement from collection points and vendors.Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to keep operations running smoothly.Build positive relationships with local communities, municipal bodies, and environmental organizations, including outreach activities that support the company’s recycling initiatives.Implement yard processes and ensure smooth integration with the company’s systems.RequirementsStrong understanding of scrap yard operations from setup and commissioning through daily management.Knowledge of safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance requirements.Ability to manage permits, licenses, audits, inspections, and documentation.Experience with material handling, sorting, baling, inventory control, and waste management processes.Ability to build supplier, customer, municipal, and community relationships.Commercial and financial capability, including cost control, P&L ownership, and vendor payment tracking.Capacity to lead teams, plan shifts, and coordinate logistics effectively.Comfort with process implementation and system integration in an operational environment.Who can applyProfessionals with experience in operations, scrap handling, yard management, compliance, logistics, and financial ownership for a processing facility are suitable for this role.Additional informationThe role involves end-to-end responsibility for a scrap yard business, with emphasis on profitability, sustainability, and stakeholder management.
