About the Opportunity

The University of Tasmania is hiring for several workplace relations positions within its People and Wellbeing team, including Senior Workplace Relations Consultant, Workplace Relations Specialist, and a Senior Workplace Relations Consultant focused on enterprise bargaining. These roles sit within a function that has recently undergone major transformation and are suited to professionals who want to help shape a modern, forward-looking employee relations service.

Depending on the appointment, the role may be full-time or part-time, fixed term or ongoing. Some fixed-term roles include parental leave coverage. For 12-month fixed-term appointments, flexible working is supported, including the ability to work remotely from locations along the East Coast of Australia, as well as Tasmanian-based arrangements.

You will provide specialist guidance on workplace and industrial relations matters across the University, helping leaders handle complex cases, interpret legislation and agreements, and strengthen capability across the function. The enterprise bargaining-focused role will lead the full bargaining cycle, from planning and strategy through negotiation and implementation of the Staff Agreement.

In all roles, you will work with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including business partners, Legal Services, unions, and employee representatives, while maintaining a practical, people-focused approach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-level advice on workplace relations matters across the University.
  • Support the development, negotiation, and rollout of the University’s staff agreement.
  • Lead or contribute to the end-to-end enterprise bargaining process, including preparation, strategy, negotiations, and implementation.
  • Guide leaders and stakeholders through complex employee relations and case management issues.
  • Ensure advice and actions align with legislation, enterprise agreements, and governance requirements.
  • Work with internal teams, unions, and other third parties to achieve effective outcomes.
  • Help build capability and strengthen workplace relations practices across the broader function.

Requirements

  • Strong expertise in workplace relations and industrial relations law, along with a sound understanding of modern HR practices.
  • Ability to convert policies, procedures, and employment frameworks into practical workplace solutions.
  • Experience coordinating complex projects, ideally in a large organisation or higher education setting.
  • Excellent relationship-building and communication skills, including consultation, facilitation, and negotiation with staff at all levels, unions, and external parties.
  • Demonstrated experience representing matters before industrial tribunals and commissions.
  • Background in enterprise bargaining within the higher education sector.
  • Strong self-management skills and the ability to perform effectively under pressure.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Project Management, HR, Business, or a related area, or equivalent experience in a large and/or complex organisation.
  • Additional role-specific expectations will be set out in the applicable Position Description.

Perks and Benefits

  • 26 weeks of paid parental leave for primary carers.
  • Employer superannuation contribution of 17%.
  • Access to health and fitness membership options.
  • Discounts on accommodation and car hire.
  • Offers related to health insurance and banking.
  • Novated leasing options.
  • Flexible working arrangements for eligible fixed-term appointments.
  • Opportunity to work remotely from the East Coast of Australia for supported fixed-term roles.
